Early Decision questions?

Ok so this is a quick question. I'm think about applying to Cornell ed, but have some questions. Now I know this is a big decision, but I'm positive I want to go there and I'm doing a visit soon to be sure. Now my guidance counselour told me I have a relatively good chance of getting in, but I wanted to apply Ed to get the best chance. But she told me on the off chance I don't get in all other colleges I apply to will know I applied ed to cornell and will be less likely to take me. So is it true that applying ed will ruin my other chances?

read this about other colleges finding out (it may be your HS causing the problem):
[Do OTHER colleges know if you’ve applied Early Decision or Early Action elsewhere? - Ask The Dean](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/dean/archives/do-other-colleges-know-if-youve-applied-early-decision-or-early-action-elsewhere.htm)

If you apply ED to Cornell, and you are accepted, then it will ruin your chances at the other schools because you are suppose to withdraw your applications from the other schools. If you don’t, Cornell may be very upset with you and that will ruin your chances at all schools.

Also, only apply ED if you can afford to go, regardless of the financial aid they give you. While you are able to withdraw due to financial hardships, you will not have other alternatives (you will have withdrawn your applications to other schools).

Wouldn’t you be able to apply after you find out whether or not you get in? For example, if you find out on Dec. 15th of admittance and FA, and it’s not enough, couldn’t you apply to others for the January 1st deadline?

isaiahstock, it is possible but that would be cutting it pretty close. You have to send your SAT scores and unless you want to pay for them to be sent overnite, it could take up to 2 weeks for the schools to get them from the collegeboard. With the holidays happening then, it is a risk.

I agree with Operadad. Only apply ED if you think financially you could go.

I sincerely apologize, OP, for asking another question! Hopefully this will just get some more viewers to help you out, too.

I did the Swat estimator and it said I would likely have to pay a net price of $23,000-some, whereas places like Rice University have been around $32,000 and Carleton College was around $38,000. Did I mess up some numbers in the estimator?

If not, Swat is very manageable!
