Hey guys, this is my first time posting on here!

Basically, i was just wondering how much ed would affect my potential acceptance / financial aid.

thanks!

ED will increase your chances but it’s tough today by how much because washu doesn’t release ED stats. As for fin. Aid, this is true in most cases, since you’re applying early, the school will have fresh funds for fin aid and may be more generous.

You should call the FinAid office and ask.
Also, I’m not sure that people who get in ED necessarily get early FinAid offers, so I think it’s best to check on that.

If you apply Early Decision and also want financial aid, you’ll need to file a financial aid application by around Nov. 15 (not sure about the date). This isn’t the FAFSA – for ED financial aid applicants WUSTL has its own application.

If you are admitted ED in December, you’ll receive your financial aid package a days later. I’m not sure I agree with nooob that these ED financial aid packages tend to be more generous because it’s early and they have lots of money. I think it might cut the other way: since you’ve applied ED, they know they’ve got you so long as they meet their calculation of your estimated need, so there’s no need to be extra generous. In my son’s case (he was admitted ED last year), we thought the financial aid package offered was very fair.

Oh yeah, I didn’t mean that they’d give you more than what your EFC asked for, but I think they’ll still be able to meet your full need.

And I agree with that, nooob – money is available at that point. It’s just that as an ED admission, you’re in no position to bargain (like you might be if you’re an RD admission and have competing admission offers (and better financial aid packages) from other schools. That situation has the potential for being abused, and ED applicants need to be aware of that possibility. But, as I said, I thought we were treated fairly in the ED process.

Like many things in life, deciding to apply ED involves an element of trust and good faith. In our case, we felt that WUSTL matched our trust.

Hey thanks for the replies guys!

I also had some questions about merit based aid. Because my financial need is not that high, I will not be receiving a lot of money even if I receive 100% need met. Thus, I’m looking for some merit-based scholarships and, and how likely said money is to get. Any ideas?

Merit based aid at WashU is extremely difficult to come by, at least the legitimate ones. They might give you merit aid in your financial aid package but that’s just need-based aid in disguise. Getting true merit aid requires writing extra essays, being interviewed in the next year, etc. Not even students of Harvard caliber are guaranteed merit aid. My suggestion is to apply anyways despite the extremely low chances, pray they meet your 100% need first, then if accepted, apply to other outside merit scholarships for the rest of the year and get a part time job since you’ll already know which college you’re going to. You might be surprised how many outside scholarships there are.

Thanks for the help nooob, what outside merit scholarships / grants do you suggest? and where can I go to find legitimate scholarships / grants?
