Early Decision Results Thread

Thanks ID. I'll talk with my GC tomorrow. I'm not pessimistic about the situation, just my odds of getting in. Anyways, I'll keep you all posted. Congrats to all who have gotten in so far!

Got accepted today! Totally excited haha. If you want to view my stats you can look through my previous posts and look at the subject that says "looking for safeties" or something like that. My SAT II subject scores were 740 us history and 680 literature
See y'all next year. (I almost never say y'all, i swear. Its so much easier to type than "you all" though)

Thank God, I have no more college applications to fill out.

Congratulations to atlantamom's son and to MoonGirl. BTW, it's not only OK to say "Ya'll", but you can even throw in a "Ya'll come back and see us now, hea'" every once in a while!

NJPitcher: I'm not pessimistic about your chances.

How many people from Bergen County got accepted ED1 to Swat Class of 2010? Yeah, all of us totally should meet up somewhere before next fall. I'd love to meet all of you. I can't wait to go to Swat; I'd totally go next week if I could. It's going to be a loooong rest of senior year now until graduation.

ID, I hope you know something I don't know. I guess I'm just assuming that I'm an average applicant, which gives me something like a 35% shot...can't say I don't wish it were better ;)

Congrats all, hopefully I'll have good news at some point tomorrow.

Hold tight -- we're still waiting in Texas, too.

NJPitcher: I think you have shown such a keen interest and excitement about Swarthmore on here that it has to be obvious in your application. Plus you're a pitcher, man. I think those two things alone make you a little better than "average." We both have about the same grades/stats and I got accepted, so I think your chances are a little better than you think right now. I can't imagine what you're going through, but just hang in there a little bit longer.

Yudishira: Yile and I were actually talking about meeting somewhere like at Swat...we're both from PA (calling all CCers within driving distance!). Anyway, I'm leaving for Tanzania on December 28th, so we were going to try to do something soon. Prob won't end up working out, but if it did it would be nice.

I count 19 accepted, 1 deferred and 1 rejected - AMAZING!!!!!

Congrats to all of you Swatties in Class of 2010.

Good luck to ladylazarua & infinitismo on finding another school they love.

Well...

Decision: Deferred

[li] Gender: Male[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Who knows. I interviewed, thought it went well. I visited twice, once for an overnight. Hell, I even answered questions in the classes I sat in on. Oh well.
General Comments: My GC called, so I called afterwards and she first told me I was rejected, then realized I was only deferred. Oh well. Hope things work out, but life sucks right around now.

NJPitcher,
So sorry this didn't work out the way you were hoping. I hope you will keep up your interest in Swarthmore and keep your grades up so that you can submit strong mid-year grades. You might want to speak with the baseball coach to see if he can offer some insight. We will continue to follow your "quest" and know that everything will work out for you in the end.

Congratulations to all that were accepted!

NJPitcher, I am so sorry you were deferred. After you recover from the shock, I hope you will realize that this is just one school out of so many great ones, many of which will be so happy to have you there.

I hope you will keep posting and let us all know how things are otherwise progressing. I was really hoping for you to get onto Swarthmore, but you will have many good choices. Where else are you applying? Are your other applications in, or were you holding them pending this decision? Please take care and do fun things this weekend.

Sorry, NJPItcher, hope it works out for you in the RD round.

NJPitcher: Darn. I'm really sorry. You did everything you could do. I felt all along that the decision in your case would hinge on baseball hook versus class rank. I was thinking 50%/50%, which aren't bad odds. Evidently, everything you did made a positive impact . It must have been "close" because you did get a deferral, which is pretty rare at Swarthmore. That indicates that sombody in the admissions committee was (and is) fighting for you.

I think the higher ranked student from your school applying may have put Swarthmore in a bit of a bind and may have contributed to both of you getting deferred.

I would agree with sending mid-term grades. I would probably e-mail or call the baseball coach at some point to get a sense of where things stand. Maybe just a simple polite e-mail for now letting him know you got deferred, expressing a continued interest, and mentioning that you'll call after the holidays.

For now, focus on your other apps. You'll be getting a bunch of acceptance letters from great schools in April.

Shoegal hasn't received her letter yet. Friday's mail came and still no letter. I called, and they won't give an answer over the phone until Monday morning.

Shoegal and giddy-up in Texas are the only two still waiting by my count.

Actually, there was one more in NYC, but I'm guessing that one may have been received.

Thanks all, I just emailed Suzi Nam who's my regional adcom, and gave what I assume is the basic letter (does deferral actually mean I have shot, or is it a nicer rejection, and if I have a shot what can I do to improve my chances) and I left her my cell, because I'd much rather talk over the phone (I couldn't find her office phone online). Anyways, congrats to all who got accepted, I hope I'll be seeing you all. If not, congrats and enjoy swat.

NJPitcher:

Sounds like you did fine e-mailing Suzy Nam. Now, shift your focus to the other schools on your list. There are plenty of great colleges!

I have no earthly idea what other schools are on your list, but just off the top of my head, Haverford, Carleton, and Grinnell come to mind as fundamentally similar places that I'd be thinking about. Also, make sure that you have stone cold safety or two so that you aren't sweatin' bullets in April!

I have a family member at Carleton. It is less intense than Swat and a little bigger. I know a girl that transferred to Carleton from Swat and is much happier at Carleton because there is less pressure. Carleton is attracting many more applicants from the northeast these days but you still get geographic diversity points for being from the northeast versus the midwest.

I've interviewed at Carleton already, and at Bowdoin (my number one until I saw Swat). Then there's Haverford (my interviewer called me on Wednesday, but I didn't want to call back until I heard from Swat) and Bates. My safeties are Skidmore, Gettysburg and Hampshire.

On an interesting note, Suzi Nam called me back within the hour, and she said they barely defer anybody, I should send a recommendation or two, write another Why Swat (although more informal) saying that I still wanna go, and she wishes me luck. I kinda wish I knew exactly how many got deferred, but they got 44% more applicants this year than last...I have a feeling that I may have gotten in last year. Ah well, time to (kind've) move on.

Decision: Deferred

[] Teacher Recs: Excellent, just like everyone's.
[] Counselor Rec: Well she's an idiot, but OK I think.
[] Hook (if any): First generation college student on one side/First generation American on the other. Internship with my US Senator. I also speak 4 languages.

[] School Type: Top 10 Public in the Country, Super-Intense
[] Ethnicity: White, Jewish
[li] Gender: Female[/li][/ul]Other Factors:I thought my interview was really good, but I guess not. Anyway, I just got my letter yesterday, which is weird because I live in the middle of NYC. Whatever.
General Comments: Like NJPitcher, I'm moving on. My school limits us to 7 private schools, and I'm applying to Dartmouth, Middlebury, Bowdoin, Bates, Colby (I don't really know why I'm applying to all the Maine schools, but whatever) and American as my safety (I'm also legacy there.) Publics include: McGill, William and Mary, SUNY Bing, UVM, UNC (Canadian schools count as public for my high school.) Uh, yeah.
