Some schools give you two opportunities to apply early decision. Does that mean you can apply to a certain school ED, and then if you are not accepted, you can go and apply to another school ED for the second round?

that's what i did

That's exactly what happened to a relative of mine. He didn't get ED to his first choice in autumn (rejected without any second chance to reapply there). Cleverly he did ED for his "reach"iest school, hoping to improve his odds, but it didn't work.
Oh, well. He felt about equally good about the other 6 schools on his list. So, he jumped onto another school that had "ED-II" and he was thrilled that they accepted him on their "announce" date of Feb. 1.
The only hard part was he had to do all that work on the other 5 schools and submit applications (including the fees) to meet their deadlines (between Jan 1-Feb 1 deadlines). When he got the ED-II "YES", he withdrew the other 5 applications. But, naturally, he could not risk it that the ED-II place would say "yes" so he just did the extra work and lost those app fees. There are no guarantees so be sure you get all the other apps in, even if you're hoping that ED-II will say "Yes."
