Early Decision - SAT

Hey everyone,

Please answer this question thoroughly. Since I am a Canadian, I am not entirely familiarized with the American university admissions process. If people who've experienced my predicament when they applied to Cornell can help me out, that would be awesome!

In short, I am writing the Math II, Biology, and Literature subject tests this November, but I am applying ED to Cornell College of Arts and Sciences. I have written the Math I and Biology subject tests before, but did horribly. If my November test scores don't arrive in time, I don't think I will get in. So, how can I ensure that the admissions office will receive my scores in time before they review my application - is there any way to expedite the process and/or let admissions know I am taking Nov tests?

I appreciate all of the help!!

Why don’t you take them in October?

I’m taking the SAT reasoning test in October

You get to choose which subject tests to send, right? I heard that if you don’t send a part of your application, such as subject tests, admissions will contact you, and thus, wait for you to send the missing part. Is this true? If my SAT II scores aren’t sent before they review my app, could I write a note indicating that I’m taking the subject tests in November? Would they wait for my scores?

Also, I would like to know before I actually do apply, does Cornell ED bolster your chances of being admitted or does it hurt your chances?? Is the ED applicant pool more competitive?

I’ve heard replies from both sides of the spectrum. But specifically for Cornell, I hear that ED will always improve one’s odds. This is the reason why I need to know if my Nov scores will reach admissions in time. If they don’t, I might as well apply regular decision.

Again, I’ve had mixed replies, but most people say if I write the recipient school on the day of the test and/or rush the scores, admissions will definitely receive them in time. The Cornell website also says scores usually arrive in time for the app review, but it’s not guaranteed.

Can someone who has had experience with this when applying to Cornell please corroborate this???

If I got a dime for everytime I’ve seen this thread. While it is very possible your scores will be delayed in November, it is very unlikely. CollegeBoard can be negligent sometimes but not for that negligent c’mon.

So @Lelyke, you’re saying that it is 100% guaranteed that Cornell admissions will receive my scores in time as long as college board does not delay them?

But if I may ask, how do you know all of this info, and why doesn’t Cornell post this info on their website? I appreciate the info nonetheless, it’s a huge relief!!

Cornell can get daily data dumps from the testing services. Your scores arrive when Cornell downloads them.

@T26E4, sorry I don’t understand what you mean by “data dumps”…

All scores are sent electronically. THere is no lag time btwn when collegeboard processes your request and when the college receives them.

So… in other words, Cornell will receive my scores in time?

I know this from experience, I was the one of the “few” unfortunate ones in my center who got their scores delayed because CollegeBoard marked our scripts late. That is the kind of negligence I’m talking about not score sending because immediately your scores are available College Board sends it to Cornell. I never implied that there was a 100% guarantee, because it did happen to me so it could happen to anyone else although the chances are quite slim. Having said that, this happened in October so it wasn’t half as bad with Sandy and all.

I want to apply an EA or ED in architecture, and in the same situation with you.
Unfortunately it is clearly stated on the official website of the Department of Architecture that the last chance I can take the SAT subject test is in October.

Donno if it is not the situation for you, since your department might have different policies? Well I don’t know actually.

RomyZheng, it says specifically that the last time you can take the MATH subject test is in October. And yeah, this only applies to the College of Architecture

I’m applying to the College of Arts and Sciences

If you are applying for ED, it says your application is due November 1. I believe the November testing dates are November 2nd and 3rd this year. It just seems counterintuitive to take a test that is required as a part of your application the day after your application is due.
[Application Timelines | Admissions](When is the application deadline? - Frequently Asked Questions)

Point is, take it in October. Even then, it’s kind of a rush, but at least you waited til the last minute instead of doing things past the deadline, right?

Sorry, didn’t see you are taking the SAT in October. You should do Sept-October for testing, then do your app. Or, reconsider applying ED.

There is no September SAT date

@Lichte94 that’s not how it works, you can send your test scores after the Nov 1st deadline, what you need to submit by that deadline is your app, essays etc. BTW Cornell doesn’t recommend rush reporting, so I won’t advise you to.

Although what you said is how it’s supposed to work
