i may apply to uva from out of state, and have heard mixed opinions on applying early decision. would it help or hurt my chances ?

dont think of applying early to hurt or help, they are relatively the same. However, if you really want to attend UVA, and are a solid applicant you can pretty much lock yourself by applying early. UVA's ED rate is around 40%, where as their RD rate is around 38%, so its not that big of a difference.

The acceptance rate doesn't matter. The quality of applicants between the ED and RD pool is noticeably different... if the ED applicants were given RD consideration then the acceptance rate would be much lower. However, you will still be held to OOS standards, but you'll be competing against a pool of applicants that are not as qualified as RD. This will probably help or maybe not matter, but I doubt it would hurt you.

definately helps. figure as long as your stats are competitive, the worst that happens is u get deferred. atleast you get a 2nd shot - even if its slim.
