Early Decision when borderline?

My daughter absolutely loved Emory when we visited this summer and is considering applying early decision but her stats are not at the high end of their profile. Is it better for her to wait for regular decision or will her chances be better with early?

Applying ED to any school, including Emory, is an option that should be reserved for a student's top choice in schools and when attending does not carry any financial considerations -- the reason being that ED carries a binding commitment to enroll if accepted. If these two factors hold true with your daughter, then applying ED will increase her chances slightly, based on the higher percentage of acceptances for ED applicants.

Her GPA and SAT scores are slightly below the average of enrolled freshmen at Emory, but she has challenged herself academically with a lot of AP classes, and her EC's are solid. Assuming that your daughter had registered with the Admissions Office when she visited this summer, she will have established "demonstrated interest". (The Admissions Office will typically ask students to fill out a small card with contact information.) If not, go to the Emory website and order their video/DVD, and the information will be communicated to the Admissions Office as well. Good luck!
