Hello!
I couldn’t find any discussions on RISD early decision class of 2020, so I’m making one!
I’m so anxious to hear back, anyone else feel the same?
Hello!

Hey there! I’ve been searching for one too. Anxiously awaiting the second week of December…
Hi Emm731!!
Me too!! Sigh, I wish November would just end! Do you know if the acceptance rate goes up for early decision? I’ve heard mixed things, also so glad to find another ED RISD person!
I’m glad I’ve found you!! I’ve heard that the ED acceptance rate is generally higher, but that’s because there’s more higher level applicants applying at the time (that’s coming from Admissions).
anyone heard anything?
Not yet! I’m pretty sure we won’t hear anything until the second week of December
I went through the Facebook page and found that last year ED applicants were notified December 11th, I just want the days to go by faster!
Oh that’s late in the week!
this is the week! so nervous!
I know…According to the Facebook group though it sounds like we may have to wait until the end of the week.
just found out we will be emailed thursday night
Thanks for sharing!
I GOT IN!!!
ME TOOOO!!
YAY!!! I’ll dm you on here!
lol, hey guys! very happy you guys got in. Hows risd? honestly it is my dream school and i am also planning on doing early decision. I was wondering was ur gpas were and sat scores if its possible. I am so scared because i really really want to get in but i want tp talk to someone that has gotten in. It would mean a lot thanks!
I suggest you look into VCUARTS its the #2 ranked arts school in the entire country. Yale is #1. Higher ranked than RISD.
@canola1402 - My daughter got a 1900+ on the Old SAT. Her Math and Verbal were 1270. Her unweighted GPA was around a 3.6. In our experience, there are several dedicated art schools that put greater emphasis on academics, RISD being one of the most prominent. Although we still believe portfolio is the crucial component of the application, there is no doubt that a strong academic record, including strong board scores, will really help the application. This said, remember that these academic requirements are still well below those of Ivy League or other elite private and public colleges. Keep in mind that there is no deferral at RISD. If you are not admitted ED, you are out. This played heavily in my daughter’s decision to forego ED to work on her portfolio. The 3 months between December and March during which she gave her all toward improving and expanding her portfolio were a revelation and I think she took a 50-50 ED application and turned it into a 90-10 RD one. There are of course other top art schools to which you can apply but since you are only asking about RISD, I will assume you know these as well as the rest of us and will find your way. Good luck!

@canola1402 I replied on your other thread but my DD had very similar grades AND approach to her portfolio as @BrooklynRye . While her portfolio going into her senior year was already pretty strong, she got some great feedback at Fall National Portfolio Days and really stepped things up & was able to use her time wisely in her senior art classes and added a lot of new pieces. Re academics, DDs GPA unweighted is 4.0. She’s considered not a ‘good’ standardized tester and got lower than what was expected based on her general grades. I say that with sarcasm since SAT grades were 1900+ on old one and 32 on ACT (so she did fine, just not what teachers thought she could do). She tests better on APs & had five AP credits at time of college application - (4) 5s and (1) 4. Plus a good chunk of extracurricular activities (many arts related, but not exclusively).
Hope this info helps! And feel free to ask more about what we know about RISD so far & about any other schools too. Many of us have visited & researched a whole bunch of them on this journey! My daughter had very specific academic, location and school environment wants, & she found many schools that were a good fit and would have happily gone to most of her picks.
