Early Decision

Son (junior) really loves GW and wants to apply next Fall. Question: He has a 700M and 620CR -- would it be better for him to apply ED1 or II or just regular decision?

Also, with these SAT scores, do you think he'd have a decent shot?

It is much easier to get into GW ED 1 or ED 2 than regular decision. He should have no problem if he applies ED, but I am not sure about regular decision. I know of kids who applied regular decision who had higher SAT's but got waitlisted this year.

The only stats you gave for your son were his math and verbal sat scores. What are his other stats? Without knowing that it is really impossible to answer your questions. His CR SAT is a little low, not terrible, and math is fine. How were his grades, activities, etc? Boards are just boards - they look at the whole picture.

Thanks very much for both responses.

His other SAT (writing) score is a 520, but is taking again next week in hopes of higher score! He has a 4.7 GPA out of 6.0, taking mostly advanced level courses and will be taking 3 APs senior year. He's on varsity golf and is president of latin club, member of amnesty international and student council.

From what first respondent says, ED looks like the way to go for his best shot -- do you agree?

I agree. However, bear in mind that ED is binding. If you are hoping for financial aid, it may not be the best way to go since you cannot comparison shop. If your son changes his mind (and yes it happens A LOT), ED can also cause problems. There are drawbacks going this route, and be aware of them.

Thanks for all your responses! I know, ED is binding and irreversible that's why I want him to wait until we've seen all colleges this summer -- he did really like it after visiting this past weekend.

It seems like everyone's in agreement about his applying ED if serious about it being his first choice -- seems like the way to go for him.

a 4.7 is equal to what out of 100?

Have you considered having him take the ACT? My daughter has a high GPA like your son's, similar SAT's but did much better on the ACT and ultimately only submitted those scores. She was admitted regular decision and will be attending this fall.

I believe his 4.7 out of a 6.0 translates into approx. a 3.14 or something close to that. I know it is lower than what GW says their average GPA is but it has been in mostly advanced classes.

I'm basically trying to guage if the ED1 or 2 at GW would be a good chance of him using his one ED chance at GW or are his GPA/SATs too low to have a really strong chance of his gaining admittance. Just don't want him wasting his one ED shot if it doesn't look feasible. Thankfully, we don't have to weigh financial aid packages so that part is not a problem.

Thanks for any and all input!

I'm sorry....I misunderstood the GPA formula of your son's school. I think my D's grades are higher and she was accepted regular decision. You may want to establish a connection with an admissions counselor at GW and ask his/her advice. Good luck on the process next year. If you son doesn't get in ED, make certain you have some great safeties that he's really excited about. I know that's been repeated often on this board, but it is really true. It's been a rough ride at my home the past month although I do believe my D is ending up right where she'll be happiest!
