Early Decision?

Hey everyone. I’m going to be a junior next year. I’m having trouble deciding whether or not to apply for Tisch’s early decision. If you apply for early decision and are rejected, are you still eligible to audition in your senior year? I’m really worried that I might not get early decision. Also, how does early decision work? Is there in audition in addition to the application?

Thanks!

You seem confused. Early decision is not something you do in your junior year at ANY college. You have to apply in your senior year. Early Decision is an option to apply by Nov. 1 as well as audition in Nov. and you get your admissions decision on Dec. 15 (thus “early” compared to Regular Decision which doesn’t notify until about April 1 of senior year). However, the choice to apply under Early Decision (where you get the answer in Dec. of SENIOR year) should not be taken lightly because it is a COMMITMENT to attend if accepted…you are signing an agreement to attend and must withdraw your applications to all other colleges if admitted in Dec. (early). This is only appropriate for someone who is 100% positive that their Early Decision school is their first choice and that they would attend if accepted. It is not a good idea if you haven’t visited other colleges yet enough to compare them and explore the options. It is also not a good idea if you have to compare financial aid offers as you MUST attend if admitted under the Early Decision option.

Your two choices are to either apply Early Decision by Nov. 1 and audition in Nov. and be notified of admissions in mid-December OR apply Regular Decision (by Jan. 1) and have an audition and find out April 1 about your acceptance (but in RD, you are not obligated to attend if admitted). BOTH of these options are during SENIOR year. NONE are during junior year.

If you do not get accepted in Early Decision (which again, is in the first half of senior year), you cannot try again during Regular Decision later in senior year. You can only apply ONCE…one of the two ways I described above.

No matter when you apply or under which process, you MUST audition to get into Tisch. You must audition to get into ANY BFA program for that matter.

Thank you so much for clearing that up for me. It was a confusion between some friends and me. I really appreciate it.

Would it be smarter to see my SAT scores before deciding when to apply?

I’m not sure I totally get your question. If you are going to apply ED, you should know ahead of time if you are a viable candidate for NYU (test scores is one factor you have to consider and if you are in range for this university). But for anyone applying ED, you really should have your testing all done in junior year. You will have to be ready to go with applications and auditions in fall of senior year and not dealing with testing and finding out where you stand. Frankly, I think ALL students should get their testing done in junior year, and out of the way. Senior test dates could be a fall back option but it really helps to have testing out of the way and not another task to deal with in fall of senior year. Further, I don’t know how one can compile an appropriate college list without having test scores in hand and one should have their college list firmed up by last summer prior to senior year.

Again, I would not apply ED to Tisch unless you have done a thorough exploration of all colleges and have visited at least a few. It is a commitment and you need to have something to compare it to. If your family will need financial aid for you to attend, it is also better to apply Regular Decision.

Thanks again. That was really helpful!

And I was planning on taking my SATs junior year.

Thanks for all of your help!
