Early Ideas on What my chances are.

I am currently a junior in high school looking to major in tech theatre and design. i am trying to be VERY realistic about where to look for college. Currently, I am looking at
Penn State University Park
Point Park University
High Point University

my maybes are Emerson, CMU, and North Carolina school for the arts( i think theyre reaches)

My stats are
2150 on SATS(740 math 720 CR and 690 on Writing)
33 on the ACT
GPA 4.0 unweighted
Class Rank 3 out of 447(top 1%)
nationals for NFL(Forensics) past two years
Quiz team member for 3 years(captain of JV and Varsity)
HS newspaper columnist
Yearbook staff member
NFL President
Theatre Club President
I work pt at a Dairy Queen, about 12 hours a week
I also worked at a community theatre, a regional theatre, a college theatre, and have done over 40 productions in the last 3 years...

Am i setting my sights correctly, or am i over reaching myself.?

im guessing you are joking...top 1% with perfect average...2100+ sat and 33 ACT...and your looking at those mediocre colleges?

With your stats, you should remove every school on your life except Penn State University Park and CMU. Honestly, you are too overqualified for the rest. You may also want to look into Northwestern and NYU as well. With your stats, you should be looking at top schools.

drop in some ivies or something seriously.

See the problem is that our guidance department basically told me those were the only schools I could get into....so that's why my expectations seem low

what schools would be better matches then? I'm looking for ones that i actually stand a chance to get into, not just a slight hope to get into...

lol.....defintly underreaches......should aim higher....a lot higher than penn state(no offense)

should look at schools that are ranked anywhere from (8-20) by the u.s. news and rankings..

duke, university of chicago, washington university st. louis, emory, vanderbilt, northwestern...apply to ivies, you defintly have the stats...(Upenn, dartmouth, brown, columbia, cornell)

so then
what are my northwestern chances?

You should be looking at a conservatory program. You have the grades to get into Carnegie Mellon, BU, NYU and probably the portfolio to get you into CCM, SUNY Purchase, Emerson, North Carolina School of the Arts, places like that that have terrific tech programs, are selective (will only take about 12 into the tech program) and have the resources and connections to help you create the skills for your career in tech. Carnegie Mellon boasts the best alumni program and truthfully, my son who is a senior this year and has a track record equal to yours with 20 or more productions per year for the last 4 years in school, community, regional and professional houses (he is a light designer) will need every bit of luck he can get to make it in that field, despite how driven and talented he is. So don't overlook that fact. SUNY Purchase has a terrific rep for their tech department, as one of the cheapest schools, they are far more competitive to get into than the ivy league CMU. My kid's first choice is CCM, terrific rep, experience and resources in theatre, MT, Opera and Orchestral performances. Great diversity and fairly good alumn sorts of programs, though not as good as CMU.

Anyway, good luck and try try try to visit as many as you can. We learned a lot by looking at the students as well as meeting the professors.

thank you greybiscuit..you are the first helpful advice i've gotten
and good luck to your son...i can feel for him needing all the help he can get
