Early Morning Classes

I'm talking 'bout the 8 AM ones. I have one everyday. EVERYDAY. This, unfortunately, could not be avoided my freshman year since a) I was in one of the last groups to register for classes and b) scheduling issues and possibly c) the universe hates me.
My Honors privileges don't kick in until Spring semester, where I get first dibs, so I'll have to stick with them. But did anyone have early morning classes and die? I think I can handle it hopefully, and if not, I'll just have to deal with it. Any tips on dealing with them though? Should I skip a few once in a while to get some sleep or just power nap it up?

Just go sleep earlier on weekdays.

Here’s the problem: All those darlings who live in your dorm will be up LATE and making noise so it may be difficult for you to sleep. Somehow, their classes all start at 11.

Make it clear to your roommate in as nice a way as possible that you have very early classes and that will require you to get to bed early. With any luck, you will be in an honors dorm and it won’t be as much of an issue; the kids will be up late, but reading isn’t loud.

Don’t skip class and don’t get hooked on caffeine drinks. Try to get enough sleep. Your first semester will be your most challenging because everything is new and you are adjusting.

Yes, honors dorms are a little more quiet, but everyone seems to assume that all honors dorms are completely quiet. In reality the difference is pretty small. Everyone will still be up late, a great deal will still be loud. So don’t assume that just because you’re in an honors dorm the only sound will be the turning of pages.

My advice is to invest in a pair of noise-cancelling headphones. Even if your roommate is understanding about it, they still will make noise unintentionally. Just put your iPod on sleep timer, put on the headphones and go to sleep when you think is best.

Try not to make a habit of skipping class, but it’s going to happen, there’s no way around it.

I stopped going to my 8 am because it was intro to soc and attendance wasn’t mandatory. I have a 10:15 Tu/Th and I probably will miss it 5 or 6 times if attendance isn’t mandatory. The key to survival: naps.

Take a good nap at the end of the day. It will help a lot.

Get a good Ipod, CD player, whatever you like to use to listen to music and buy a few nice, relaxing CDs to block out the noise. Morning classes SUCK. I had 8 AM classes MWF in my freshman year, and it was a required class for my major with an attendance policy so I could never skip. Plus I worked late and closed nearly every night. Anyway, yeah, it sucks, but you’ll survive. Just think of all the people who wake up that early every day of their lives to go to work…at least you’ll be living on campus so your class is a short walk away :)

I know how you feel though, I have 8:30 AM classes MWF and then 9:30 AM classes TR so I can’t catch a break, lol. Not as bad as 8:30, but you’ll soon realize any morning college classes are evil.

If you’re lucky it might be a class without an attendance policy where the professor just reads off of powerpoints or out of the textbook, so no one would probably care if you skip. But that’s not always the best habit to get into, especially if you’re struggling with the subject. So don’t go into the class thinking you’ll get away with skipping all the time. You’ll just have to learn to be an adult and wake up. My high school started at 7:15 AM every day so I was used to it. It sucks, but you’ll live. Plus now you’re in the cool club of students who know how what 8 AM classes are like :)

You’ll be fine. I cannot stress enough how much you should not skip once in a while – not for any moral reason but because after a few weeks of getting up early, your body will get into a schedule that you will break if you sleep in Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Plus, I don’t know about anyone else – but I’d rather get my classes out of the way early in the day. I’d rather be learning at 8 am any day then at 1 in the afternoon when it’s gorgeous out and all I want to do is lay in the sun. I am not a morning person, and I’ll sleep 12 or 13 hours on Friday nights…it’s just the way I like my schedule. It’s my senior year and I have 8:30 am Statistics on Monday, Weds and Thursday and then Work at 8:30 Tuesday and Friday. But I’m always done with class by noon…and I have friends who have to suffer until 3:30.

^ that is true, I also have early classes this semester, but I’m done by noon. Except for days with labs. And a night class. But mostly, I’m done by noon!

lol, I think we are in the same situation. I thought that being in honors would give me first pick for the fall…boy was I wrong. That doesn’t start until spring.

However, I wanted early morning classes anyway. I like getting everything over with early in the day, so I have time to do whatever I want in the afternoon. I’m sure you’ll be able to manage.

If a class is before 10am, I will never go no matter how good my intentions may have been when I registered. I really only go consistently if it’s after 11. I just can’t handle it.

Going to sleep earlier = BORING!!! Same situation for me freshman year…I did oversleep a couple classes but generally I just got less sleep and took more naps. That’s how college goes…in my opinion, you miss out on too much by going to bed before 12am. I also have discovered that I much prefer 8am classes to 3pm/later classes (but only if the 8am class is a subject I care about and am willing to wake up for) so I’ve adjusted my schedule as such.
