Early morning or late afternoon class?

Hi everyone! For one of the classes I want to take next semester, the only time slots are at 8:30 in the morning, or at 4:40. I am not used to the college schedule yet so I don't know which to take. This is a tues/thurs class btw. The professors and other variables are about equal so any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I’m a morning person, so this would be a no-brainer for me. Campus will be quieter and there won’t be a line for grabbing a bite for breakfast. You also won’t need to worry about scheduling afternoon/evening activities around the class.

It’s only two days per week - you should be able to get up early twice.

I’d take the early morning class even though I’m not really a morning person for a couple reasons:

1) It’ll force me to get up and go to class

2) I can get the class out of the way so that the rest of the day can be free for other stuff or classes

3) 4:40 is a pretty awkward time in terms of dinner as well as other activities which often start in the early evening. So you either will miss them or go hungry because you didn’t have time to grab dinner and eating before class is kind of early at 4:40.

4) For holidays (especially Thanksgiving which usually officially starts Tuesday after class ends), it’s better to have morning classes so that you can leave early in the afternoon if you want. You don’t want to be stuck on campus for a 4:40 class.

The downsides are

1) It’s early morning which for me is usually a struggle

2) There’s no time to do last minute homework if you didn’t get to it before. But you really should be able to manage your time better anyway.

@SBR - your second downside point made me chuckle. Back when I was in school, I had a class at 3:00 that had an identical section of the class that met at 9:00. At one point during the semester, we were given a huge assignment with only a couple days to complete. A classmate of mine found a key item during his research at 8:00 on the morning of the due date and word spread quickly as everyone tried to incorporate this into their assignments.

The 9:00 class went bonkers about how unfair it was that our section had six additional hours to rewrite our assignments. The professor simply pointed out that their section had six hours to find facts prior to our section even having the assignment.

I’d go for the 4:40, I’ve had two M/W/F 8:30 classes and I ended up making it to class less than once a week. but I’m a huge night owl, I hate mornings, so it really hinges on your personal preferences.
