Did anyone on this board move into their dorm early?

Since my son is in Fish Camp Session F he has the option (for $31) to move in to his dorm (Appelt) the morning before he leaves for camp. However, he has to check in for camp between 8-9:30 and that same time interval would be his early move-in time. They have to be at Reed all checked in by 9:45.

Should we even try to do this? He does have a heavy fridge - would we be able to use the elevator in the dorm that morning? At best we just throw the stuff in and he would go back during Gig'em Week to sort it all out. During this time we have to somehow obtain the key and then turn it back in - he can't keep the key until he gets back.

I was really excited about the opportunity to move-in early, but didn't know the time would be so limited!

It really would behoove you to move in early.

Parking around Appelt is very scarce during move in and parking enforcement tries to limit you to 30 minutes of parking on the street leading up to Appelt. If you move in early, you can park and unload right next to Appelt and can take your time if someone is there with your vehicle. Otherwise, you may have to park and unload a block away in the South parking garage if you wait until after FC to move in.

As I recall, Appelt does not have elevators - check with the Housing Office to confirm this. You may want to reconsider bringing a heavy refrigerator if you don’t want to carry it up the stairs.

Also, if your son moves in early, you can avoid a trip to CS. He can return from FC and take a bus back to Appelt and settle in.

Despite the limited window during the morning before FC, it will be a lot less hassle than moving in when hundreds of other students are moving in.

Seriously…no elevators? I thought the handicap-access laws would have made them put in elevators! Oh well, his room # starts with 2, so hopefully that means he’s on the second floor. I guess I can drag my 15 year old along to help in the short amount of time… that will definitely cost me more than the $31 early move-in fee :-).

I’ll be in Fish Camp F too so I’ll probably be doing the same thing in McFadden hall… do you think we’ll have time to check in, get a key, move stuff in, then make it to FC checkin on time?

I’m fairly certain that none of the dorms have elevators. There’s a company you can rent a fridge from and they will deliver it to your dorm and pick it up at the end of the school year. They sent us info in the mail prior to school starting and there’s probably something on reslife’s website about this company.

I do not know of any of the dorms having an elevator. I imagine the first floor is considered accessible. We did the early morning move in for F last year. It worked out fine just dropping off belongings and then driving over to Reed. We got there early and were able to park close then unload onto the sidewalk and wait for the bldg to open. It was a second floor room but at the door we used we actually had to go down a flight of stairs and then up: ) There were a lot of people taking advantage of the early move in, so be there early or you will have to park further away.

Lol @ A&M dorms having elevators. A&M’s dorms are all pretty old. Good thing I was on the first floor or I would’ve had to carry my fridge and other stuff up the stairs like most students. But with early move in, at least you won’t have trouble of getting a semi close parking with all the other parents/students to carry/move all your stuff in.
