Does anyone know whether Bowdoin sends out an equivalent of a likely letter?

Last year, Bowdoin sent out some “early write” acceptances. My son’s arrived around mid-March. I think it was postmarked around the 12th.

Where did your son end up matriculating?

He’s a happy first year at Carleton.

how did Carleton win out over Bowdoin?

Just a guess, but they are equivalent colleges, and, believe it or not, some people actually prefer the midwest vibe over the New England vibe. My D1 made a similar decision. Born and raised in the midwest, high-schooled in the east, she finally rejected the New England schools and one Ivy, and returned to the midwest, but to Oberlin instead of Carleton. As a native northeasterner who spent many years living in the midwest, it’s a wonderful part of the country to go to college.

pardon me, I didn’t mean to imply that bowdoin “should have” won … I should have worded it as “how did you child decide to attend one instead of the other.”

What was the vibe at Bowdoin?

My D2 went to look at Oberlin and has applied there as well. she never got to go look at grinell but I heard that was a great school, and so is Lawrence U in Wisconsin.

Something like what Plainsman said. He really liked, but turned down, some great NE schools (Bowdoin, Brown, Middlebury), for Carleton. He attended Carleton’s summer writing program, which completely sold him on the school. There’s something of a, well, goofiness, about Carls that really appealed to him. Probably would’ve applied to Carleton ED, but we were concerned about comparing financial aid offers. Turns out, he got a great FA offer from Carleton (among others), and zilch from Bowdoin, which made the decision that much easier. Bowdoin’s a superb school, though, and I’d like to think he’d be happy at either one.

your son must have good application to be accepted to all of those schools. FA differences seem to have sealed the deal, and how great to be so pleased w/his choice. would you be willing to share what you think were his key stats to getting accepted?
