Early Notification = Regular Decision

We have been receiving a lot of phones calls and emails about Early Notification, so I wanted to clarify the most important thing...

The Common Application only allows you to select "Early Decision I", "Early Decision II", or "Regular Decision"...

If you are applying as an Early Notification (EN) applicant, you want to select "Regular Decision" on the Common App. You will also want to check the "Early Notification" box on the University of Rochester Supplement.

Remember, ED I and ED II are binding decisions. Early Notification is not binding. You must submit all of your application materials by December 1st to be considered for early notification.

Thanks! I’m sure it will be tweaked a little next year to avoid confusion. Maybe Rochester should call it “Early Action” because everyone is familiar with what that means already and how it is different from Early Decision.

And the date for FAFSA and CSS Profile for Early Notification is Feb 1, correct?

We are definitely working through the “Early Notification” bugs this year! I’m not sure if the name will change, but I do agree with you that it can be confusing (hence the large number of calls and emails…).

Yes, the FAFSA and CSS Profile deadline is February 1st for Early Notification (and all regular decision) applicants.

Therefore applying early notification would not conflict with a college’s Single Choice Early Action policy since it is technically regular decision?

Question about Early Notification. I understand that all application materials including SAT scores must arrive before Dec 1. However, the Univ of Roch website indicates it can take 1-2wks to update a student’s account with current info so that won’t tell a student that they have arrived.

I ordered my son’s SAT scores today to be sent so in theory they should arrive before Dec 1 but then how should one check to not run out of time?

Lakemom, as long as all application items are postmarked by December 1st you will be fine. It indeed will take 1-2 weeks for submitted items to be reflected in your “MyRoc” account.

The only way to decrease your anxiety is to submit ALL application materials more than two weeks prior to the deadline. That way you will be able to log on to your MyRoc account before the December 1st deadline and see that your application is complete. Please call our office if you are still concerned!

fleurs: You will have to have a conversation with the other college that you are applying to. I’m not sure how they will view our “Early Notification” process.

Thanks Tyler, My son is applying using the common app so we do have the receipt they generate with the date he applied. It is the college board scores that I am concerned about. I ordered for my son’s SAT scores to be sent just last friday.

How many times a week does Univ. of Rochester download scores from the Collegeboard to give me an idea of when to call and check by?

Lakemom, I just asked our web team, and they said that we receive scores from the college board daily. We upload these scores to our Application Review system around 4pm every weekday. The MyRoc account will update and reflect these changes overnight.

However, I do not know how long it takes your request to be processed by the college board… When the scores are sent is completely dependent on them. I’m sure if you give them a call they will tell you!

Thanks Tyler. Another question. My son is scheduled for an interview in NYC 1-7-12. I noticed you had indicated on another thread that Early Notification decisions may already be determined by the end of Dec. If so, then what input will his interview bring to his admission decision?

Hi–

S is applying based on the December 1 deadline. Nov. 5 SAT scores will be available on Nov. 22. Will that allow enough time to submit those scores by Dec. 1?

If not, he’s got some good scores from last spring that he could submit–just hoping for a little more improvement!

Thanks

Good questions!

Lakemom, your son can definitely still interview (it can’t hurt), but please realize that his application decision may not be influenced by this interview. We will be reviewing all EN applicants throughout December and into the first few weeks of January, so it is VERY likely that he will have already been reviewed by a first reader and a second reader by 1/7/12. However, any discussions that take place later in the winter regarding a potential merit scholarship could be influenced by this interview, which is why it is important to still have this conversation with a U of R representative!

MADAd, your son will be fine. Make sure that we at least have 1 set of ACT / SAT scores by the December 1st deadline. If it takes a few extra days for the new (and hopefully improved!) scores to arrive, that’s completely fine. Just make sure you put in the request for the scores to be sent by the college board ASAP.

Tyler

So you are saying the decision on whether to admit him or not may already be made but the decision about merit scholarship is made later?

So if he is accepted and notified by the end of Feb, will whatever offer of merit scholarship come with that letter?

Lakemom,

After a first reader and a second reader make their admissions decision on a particular applicant, the next step for that application is called “Committee Review”.

If the first reader and second reader disagree, a committee of 3 or more counselors will get together and decide upon the final admissions decision. Merit scholarships also have to pass through this committee review process, which happens after the first and second readers completely review an application.

Due to the fact that the merit committee meets last, your son’s interview on 1/7/12 has a better chance of impacting his potential merit scholarship (not every applicant receives a scholarship) than impacting the admissions decision. Does that make sense?

We will release Early Decision I admissions decisions on December 15th, with a potential merit scholarship arriving 7 business days after that. If you applied for need-based financial aid, that packet will arrive 10 business days after you receive your decision letter.

We will release Early Notification admissions decisions on February 15th, with a potential merit scholarship arriving 7 business days after that. If you applied for need-based financial aid, that packet will arrive 10 business days after you receive your decision letter.

We will release Regular Decision admissions decisions by April 1st, with a potential merit scholarship arriving 7 business days after that. If you applied for need-based financial aid, that packet will arrive 10 business days after you receive your decision letter.

Yes, got the picture. You have been so helpful Tyler. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain this. Thanks!

No problem! I love College Confidential.

Me too! It is has provided a tremendous wealth of information. And everyone who reads your explanation to me will benefit.

For those of you who have already applied or have children who have applied to URoch, you must check out the MyRoc portal. It is fantastic! Big green check marks noting progress in their receiving app pieces, then you can track where your app is in the review process with the name and contact for your reviewer if there are questions! I am very impressed!

On the MyRoC Website, I checked that I would be Regular Decision instead of Early Notification for part one of the application, and I can’t undo it. If a check Early Notification on the supplement to the common app, will there be an issue? Also, Stanford says that students may apply “to any college/university with early deadlines for scholarships… as long as the decision is non-binding.” Would you say that Early Notification fits under this category?

I have submitted everything for Early Notification. But… is there any possible way I can change my application to Regular Decision?

Silly-- find out who your admissions counselor is:

[University of Rochester : College Admissions](http://enrollment.rochester.edu/admissions/connect/counselor/)

Then email, or better yet, call him/her and ask that your application be moved to regular decision.
