Which decision is better, early or regular?

How can we answer this? Better is dependent on the applicant....a poor quality applicant applying ED is perhaps not better of. This is too vague a question for you to gain relevant information.

I wonder when the most number of freshmen are chosen.

Depends on the school. Some schools have a higher acceptance rate for ED than for RD, but there are many arguments for that. One is that the pool of applicants for ED is smaller. Another is that the students applying ED are stronger candidates (because they already have good grades, ECs, etc. and don't need to wait for their senior year).

Some schools take few earlies and many regulars.

What about Princeton?

Princeton Admissions Statistics Class of 2008

Early Decision
32% of the 1815 students who applied were accepted early decision to Princeton. That is a much higher acceptance rate than usual since Princeton's numbers dropped thanks to the rise at Yale and Stanford. Close to half of the incoming class positions were filled by early acceptances.

Regular Decision/Overall
Because so many spaces were taken up with early decision acceptances, the regular decision acceptance rate was only 8.8% while the overall acceptance rate was 11.9%.

Don't apply ED to a college if you also plan to apply for financial aid because you give up your ability to compare FA packages and you may bind yourself to a big payment.

hey dufus it is a bit more complicated than that but you are making a valid point.

I didn't mean that whether or not to apply ED depends entirely on FA, only that having to apply for FA could make the decision a moot point.

It really depends...

but as a bottomline for yourself-- if you have to ask yourself whether or not you should apply early to a school, then you should probably apply regular.

early for people who are comfortable with the grades they have in their hands and will love to attend that college. Like dufus said, you cannot comapre FA packages because once you're admitted, you must withdraw all other apps.

Don't apply early if you aren't sure, because you might end up "serving a four-year jail sentence with a $100k fine".

ED is for students who do not need to wait for improved grades, a better presentation of course work.....they are ready to jump right now....the beginning of the senior year. IF you are rushing to get ready for ED and you are not clearly certain regarding the school then apply RD.

hey banedon17
what do you mean by
Don't apply early if you aren't sure, because you might end up "serving a four-year jail sentence with a $100k fine".?

what i mean is, make sure you REALLY want to attend that school before you apply ED, because once you're admitted, you can't wiggle your way out (except for financial reasons). And if you don't feel happy attending that school...wouldn't it be like "serving a jail term"? ;)

Thanks!!!!!
