Early regular decision acceptance?

I realized I never posted my stats, so in case anybody cares:

Caucasian Female, Canada
SAT: 2190 - CR 690, WR 770, M 730

SATII: Math I - 730, Lit - 720

Rank: 11/250

Essay: In my opinion, the strongest part of my application. Though my stats are fine, I really have no hook, so I really think that if I get in anywhere it will be because of my essays, the common app one in particular.

Recs: I never read them, but my recommenders all told me they wrote me fabulous letters

ECs: Nothing extremely interesting. Lots of clubs (president of a few), yearbook editor, a couple of varsity sports (basketball, rugby, cross country)…

Again, congrats to everyone else who got in, and good luck to those of you waiting to find out!! Hope to see you at WesFest :)

I was accepted today! Even with the happy WELCOME TO WESLEYAN envelope, it has yet to sink in.

Son got early write today. As his stats weren’t as good as some others’, we were rather thrilled seeing the envelope from Wes!

Male, Asian, private high school.

SAT I: WR 660, CR 600, M 800.

SAT II: French 770, Spanish 760, Physics 760, Chemistry 790, Math IIC 800

APs: Calc BC 5 (in 10th grade), Comp Sci A 5, Spanish 4, Physics 5, and currently taking AP Stats, AP French, AP Chemistry. Took Multivariable Calc in 11th grade. Taking 4th year college Spanish and second semester Russian currently.

School does not ranked, weighted GPA: 4.17 (pretty much straight As except English).

Recs: we never saw them. One is from his English teacher (which we expect to be good and to be very helpful especially with his lower English grades).

Essays: very very good.

ECs: varsity baseball, key club, but nothing that really stands out. No leadership position.

Others: overseas experience with languages. disclosed Asperger’s to the school (reason for low CR score on SAT basically). one summer at U Chicago (two classes, straight A) and one summer at Carnegie Mellon (A in Russian and B in Comp Sci). sister was accepted at Wesleyan years ago, but never attend, so honestly don’t think it has anything to do with it (not sure if they even know).

wesweswesewewesewewewessss i love thier CSS major

i got the same thing in the mail on tuesday.

honestly, kinda surprised i got in, especially with an early write. could be because i’m from a largely underfunded and underprivileged high school in CA.

White
31 Act, 660 Chem 680 History
Strong Essays
Good extracurriculars

Congrats to everyone else!

@fresca: Same here!! That’s actually a big reason i loved Wes so much to begin with. I still have soo many questions about the program though, glad they have all of those info sessions for the major

Too bad it’s not a Uni major and you have to apply :0
Hope the acceptance rate isn’t super low

I got the early write on the 17th. I was… so surprised but so happy. My SAT scores were really low, and some of my other stats aren’t particularly impressive.

Female, Asian, MA, public high school
SAT I: below 2000
SAT II: all below 700 (Biology, U.S. History, Math, French)
Weighted GPA: ~4.5 (not sure what the unweighted one is)
Rank: 7/~270, top 5%
APs: English Lang, U.S. History, Biology, English Lit, Calc AB, U.S. Gov’t, Environmental Science, French
ECs: 5 clubs/associations and 4 leadership positions, piano, tons of community service, but nothing spectacular
Essay: It’s a weird essay but hopefully a memorable one.
Recs: I had two teacher recs. I read one of them and liked it. She wrote a lot about my talents and interests… And some stuff about my personality. My guidance counselor’s rec was just okay.
Other: I’m bilingual. During one summer, I had an internship. And I’ve been self-teaching myself Korean for nearly five years.

It took a while for me to finally realize I got accepted. I only read the acceptance letter and I had to leave somewhere for a couple hours… When I got home that night and saw everything else, including my financial aid stuff, I was so happy. I cried so much.

Congratulations to everyone who got in already!! And good luck to all the applicants still waiting!

Anyone else thinking Wesleyan has affirmative action in favor of Asians?

Haha what? No way dude, I don’t think there’s any place other than like…Brandeis…with affirmative action for Asians XD

i do think the university tries to draw in diversity. i am asian. I would want to say that I got in wesleyan due to my good grades and extrac and ACT score(31, thats wes average). However, im not sure i can say that anymore because i have a 3.0 senior mid year, dropped from a 4.0 junior 2nd semester, and thats really bad, but they still accepted me.

i kinda do think that alot of minorities get in due to thier ethnicity.

@Julia: SS! Im happy they have that major however, kidna scared that you only get one grade per year…what if you screw up the final exam T_T

@fresca: Yeah that is a bit scary, but if you do well during the year and you know your stuff then there’s a good chance you’ll do well. I think it’s actually pretty fair. What’s scary to me is that the test is made up of 4 essays and you have a day to complete each one and can’t talk to anyone XD That’s much scarier to me. I’m really pumped for the program, but i just wanna know how practical it really is you know? Like…am i actually gonna be able get a job after all of this ridiculous work? Cause it’s not a full on concentration…it’s like 4 things put together. I dunno…

@ Ju_liaa: there is very little “practical” value in any liberal arts major… that’s the very idea of the liberal arts. it’s not pre-professional training like engineering or nursing, but it teaches you how to think effectively and apply your knowledge and ability to learn in a broad manner (although you probably knew all of this and might be asking more about whether employers will recognize it as a “major”). CSS teaches you how to think and analyze, which are very marketable skills. keep in mind 80% of Wes grads to to grad school within 5 years of graduation…

Why is everyone hearing early? If you haven’t heard, does that mean you’ve probably been rejected?

Not in the slightest. All Wes did was send out some early writes. On CC, there are a disproportionate amount of people that will post saying they got one, but you aren’t hearing from all of the people (CCers or otherwise) who haven’t heard yet. You can’t use this forum as a sounding board for the entire applicant pool. Over 10,000 applied - maybe a dozen have stated they got an early write. Most of the acceptees haven’t been notified yet.

Thanks, Smartalic. This board is very hard on mothers!!!

@smartalic: I know what the purpose of a liberal arts education is, and i know that CSS will teach me marketable skills. What i want to know is will those skills get me a job if i don’t go choose not to do grad right away. In an ideal world i would do CSS because it’s what i love, but i have many other, more practical interests. I don’t want to make buckets of money, but i don’t want to be a starving college grad either. I’ll probably be sick of that after having been a starving high schooler/ college undergrad XD

In any case, I’m sure the CSS staff at Wesleyan will have answers to all of these questions and some good advice to give. I’m not super worried.

it’s never too soon to pay a visit to the folks over at Career Services:
[Wesleyan University: CRC](http://www.wesleyan.edu/crc/students/career_exploration/index.html)

what are your “more practical interests”? a lot of Wes students actually look at CSS as a pretty practical major, because CSS students have huge success with law school and grad school. if you’re not talking about grad school, there’s not much that makes any (non-math/science) major more practical than any other, so there’s not reason not to major in what you want.

@jarsilver: What i mean by more practical is literally just a more conventional, actually concentrated major. CSS is a conglomeration of different disciplines, and in that way it is not traditional. I may sound conservative when i say it that way and i am aware that some other students may be all “be unconventional rah rah rah!”…But i want my four years at Wes to count for something. My biggest passion is Philosophy, but it would be unrealistic to say that I’d have an easy time finding a job with that straight out of college with no grad. Possible? Definitely. Harder to find a job? Also true.

Anyways, I have many interests and I really stick to things i enjoy doing. I just want to make sure that the “I’m happy doing this” category, and the “I can live off of this without starving” category are both fulfilled. Also, I’m only a pre-frosh so i have no s**t clue what I’m actually saying yet…I have 4 years to figure that one out XD

And thanks Johnwesley for that link!

omg! you like philosophy?! i applied to many schools as philo major!
