Can someone tell me why Cornell starts so much earlier than other colleges? All my friends are going to school in late August/early September, but freshman orientation is on the 19th for CU. Que pasa????

eh, i think it's about normal, if not just a few days early. Classes start the 25th i think. Cornell has its orientations a few days before classes, while other colleges have it in the spring, summer, etc. A much better idea, IMO.

Cornell starts early in the fall, has an extremely long winter break, and ends late in May. This is to avoid the harshest part of winter, which occurs during late December and during all of January.

Actually, a lot of NY schools start around the same time Cornell does. My high school friends and I all stayed in-state. I went to a college on Long Island that didn't start up until September 4th - and I was basically alone in my hometown for two weeks because all my friends had already started school. Having transferred, this year I go from last to leave to first...but only by a couple of days.

Yeh, same thing here...NYU is starting a week into September.

Cornell not only starts earlier, but ends later.

Okay, well maybe it's a lot of upstate NY schools. Which would fit with what one person said about avoiding the weather. Either way.

Cornell really starts the 25th, froshies just have to come a week earlier.

and yes, the start/end dates and long break are to avoid the weather IMO
