Early vs. Regular Decisions

Is it easier to get into NYU regular decision or early decision?

Early Decision

The acceptance rate is slightly higher in the E.D. round but the applicants in E.D. are generally stronger academically.

Matth...this is what NYU addmissions said:
"The academic profile of a student who is offered admission through the early decision program is nearly identical to that of a student offered admission through the regular decision review. What these statistics indicate is that a student who is not competitive academically to be admitted early would, unfortunately, also not be competitive to be admitted during the regular decision review. This is the primary reason we do not re-evaluate students who are not offered admission through the early decision program during the regular decision review."

I know what the website says but the reality is that E.D. applicants are almost always stronger academically than R.D. applicants. It was that way when I first visited, it was that way the year I applied and was accepted, and information sessions have stated that in the past two years as well. The reason they state that on their website is to discourage applicants who think they'll have an easier time getting in with lower academic stats if they apply E.D. That happens at some schools but not at NYU. The reason that they acceptance rate is slightly higher for E.D. is that there are no limitations on the numbers they can take early, unlike during regular. They generally fill approximately a third of their incoming freshman class with E.D. applicants.

Did you apply early decision or regular dec.?

Early decision.

"E.D. applicants are almost stronger academically..." how? Most R.D. NYU applicants offered admission are those with the strongest academic records (including good grades, SAT scores, extracurricular with leadership positions, class rank, essays, ext…) Knowing this, the stats of those who apply to NYU R.D. are quite similar to those that apply E.D….how could the stats be that different between the two pools of applicants?

I'm talking about the entire field of applicants overall, not just those who are offered admission, as it is stated on the Admissions b/b. As a group, E.D. applicants are almost always a stronger group academically than the group who apply R.D. They are a more uniformly strong group, whereas you will get many applying R.D. who apply but who may not have any realistic chance of getting in. They will also have applied to a lot of other schools. This is not the case with E.D. because you have a group of applicants whose first choice school is NYU and they know that the decision is binding. People don't apply E.D. 'on a lark'. I'm not talking about the ones who are offered admission. Those stats generally are fairly similar. The applicant pool in E.D. is what's stronger.

I know this doesn't have anything to do with E.D. or R.D. but... 70% of accepted applicants at NYU rank in the top 10% of their class...does the remaining 30% of applicants rank above or below this percentage?

below, because if you're in the top 5% of your class, you're also in the top 10%

sorry, that was a stupid question
