"Early write" numbers exploding at Williams

I got mine in the mail today. The personalized touches of academic and extracurricular interests in the letter was nice.

Williams doesn't give interviews, right?

Yankee Boy ... nobody responded to your statement, but I would agree. A school that is smart enough to target certain "exceptional" students with early notification, in order to improve yield or just generally get a jump in the good karma department, is obviously smart enough to understand that the students not so targeted, but let in at the conventional date, are aware of this multi-tiered admittance practice. Clearly, once they commit to targeting some, this is unfortunately a necessary evil -- certain admittees might feel as if they are not wanted quite as much.

I know, I know ... it's an honor to be offered admissions by William at all ... there isn't necessarily a correlation between the early writes and Williams wanting these students "more" (they're on record as saying the never or rarely use early writes when there are multiple kids applying from the same school ... or sometimes from the same congested metropolitan area) ... and, of course, once you actually matriculate, the particulars of your admittance by the admissions office matters not a whit (the admissions office is not the school).

Still ... it's unavoidable that such students might feel less wanted. And this is particularly so since the strength of the Williams' applicant pool is such that many of these non-early write students are simultaneously fielding one or more early writes or scholarship offers from other schools who have targeted them and are clearly going out of their way to show these students how much they are wanted.

Fascinating, complex stuff -- this admissions game. Good luck to all ... Early Write admittees and those who have yet to hear.

Oh I didn't know that. Meh.

yes and no. I had an "informal informative interview" in the fall. I don't think it affected decisions much, but it was with the regional admissions guy for my area, which couldn't have hurt.

"Research has shown that personalized notes and an indication that you were a "top applicant" gives most students the warm and fuzzies, and increases their interest and propensity to matriculate at a given school."

Perhaps, like a first kiss, this effect only applies to the first one received (and even then when one doesn't already have an EA or SECA acceptance).

yeah-i got an early write but there are like 5 or 10 other kids applying from my high school so I'm keeping it on the down low until april

Wow, it's just the opposite for me. No one at my school has even heard of Williams, let alone apply. But I s'pose that's what happens in TX...

AHH! I know the feeling of having no one know that Williams exists. I'm used to my friends and teachers and family friends not knowing, but even my guidance counselor asked me where it was. That's just sad.

It IS very sad. In my school, after telling classmates that Williams accepted me, I either got blank faces and questions as to where the school is located OR a great deal of excitement from people who actually know the school.

hey, guys, i was just wondering, have you heard of any internationals that have received early writes? by email or by normal mail? when? thanx in advance!

VerBore, my classmate received an early write from Williams yesterday. He is Ethiopian.

Sorry for the tangent, but remember how I didn't get a car decal in my folder?

Well, my best friend, who was also admitted as an early write, put the one she received on my car. Yay for wonderful people!

Aw, I love her! And I love Williams...

Polishdude:

I know what you mean. The 'Williams?? What's that? I thought you were smart' look i get from people used to get on my nerves at first. It's possibly the best college in US for god;s sake!!

But think of it like this. One of my friends who is also a Williams 2010 said when i whined to her about people not knowing Williams that 'Muggles don't know about Hogwarts.' So i guess it's only the special poeple who knows about our Williams:)

All we gotta do is to find a special name for non Ephs.

I would LOVE a bumper sticker that said "Muggles don't know about Williams"!!! Thanks for the quote-- now when i get the typical blank looks I will be laughing... good one!

I just got a phone call from a student congratulating me and telling me to come to the April 8-11 (right dates?) thing...
I'm excited and surprised, but I haven't received anything..
Not a joke, right?
Has anyone else gotten a phone call?

pretzels, i got a phone call tonight too! same dates and everything.

haha :) someone quoting me?? well noxious, let me quote you then. "And Williams is on the Berkshire Mountains, just like the Shire in the Lord of the Rings." I just like that. :D at least as smart as my simile. :P yet it's difficult to find a name for non-Ephs. Any ideas??

Yay, I just got one in the mail yesterday! Congratulations to all those who received Early Writes!
