"Early write" numbers exploding at Williams

So they're sending acceptance letters, and they're just going to send the other (rejection) letters in the first week of April?

Oh, has anyone in CA heard anything???

See... this is what I'm talking about. Those rolling regular decision letters cause mass hysteria

Yep. I'm pretty hysterical right now. I'm not a big fan of rolling decision letters, in case you can't tell.

Ahh, me neither. This is torture.

As someone who has not gotten one an "early write," I think it's bad what they're doing. I think the college admissions process - at least for those applying to schools like Williams - is too stressful as it is, and I think it is unfair they have anxious applicants running to the mailbox every day.

I also think that there is something wrong with the way that accepted applicants are essentially being ranked, especially at a school as small as Williams where if you choose to attend (after not receiving an early write) you might be one of only 100-200 in your class.

I don't think there's a problem with rolling admissions, but I think there is a problem with rolling acceptances. If they wanted to do this they should have been up front about it AND they should also have sent out each decision when they were ready, not just acceptances.

Say what? You want rejections to go out early?

^ Well, I agree with stam. If I'm going to get a rejection anyway, I'd rather get it over with and get it sooner than later.

I agree. It almost feels like rejection by default at this point with all these early acceptances.

I think the rolling admission comments are a bit overstated.
I could be wrong but haven't the majority of early letters gone out already? I think from the 12th through 15th is when Williams and Amherst do this. As far as someone saying some were sent in February, I would guess they are either wrong or that was a rare case.
I guess the next few days will tell, but the next two weeks should be quiet leading up to the first of April.

You really can't blame Amherst and Williams for sending early writes.
They need a leg up on the students who have included them with the Ivy applications. They want the best students and they are fighting for cross admits. I think the % is something around 15 with HYP.
Those are not good statistics so getting you interested in them 3 weeks early is a good plan for them.

For you RD hopefuls all I can say is "keep the faith", time is still on your side.

I share your concerns.

It's nice to know that I am already accepted at some of my top choices but still nothing from the school I applied early to, Williams.

It feels almost as if Williams's admissions office is cheating the process.

It seems like there are just a lot of CC folks getting the early writes this year - I'm not sure that Williams is doing anything differently this year but I can understand why you would think so after reading about all the early acceptances posted on CC.

Hi ryeCT - still got my fingers crossed for you for RD. Where else have you heard from?

i agree with jrpar. CC represents a small section of college applicants. And of course, a lot of people on here are wildly qualified.

Well, I'm a bit concerned since I applied to HYPS, and not even getting an early write from Williams seems to be a bit of a "Oh @$#&" for me in terms of my other schools.

Misoobishi, I had the same mentality as you. But don't worry too much, you still have time to receive one. I mean, i just got the acceptance last night, so there is still time and hope.

Well, I guess I'll keep on crossing my fingers. :p But the longer I have to wait, the more nervous I get. sigh

So all of you got your calls around dinner time...is this dinner time EST or PST? lol Just curious :)

i'm in your boat too...and I'm freaking out. This is sooo stressful!

did any intels get early writes?

Since no intel has spoken up, I'll chime in. My guess is they know they'll lose intels to Harvard, so I don't know that they have a leg up here. Just shooting from the hip.

So things on CC often get carried away. I'm studying abroad this year so I can't guarantee that my information is up to date, but nothing I've seen, heard, or read leads me to believe that anything has changed over last year.

To begin with, regardless of whether things have changed or not, CALM DOWN! Not getting an Early Write is definitely not a bad sign; if you get in and come to Williams, you'll still be in the majority among RD matriculants. Early Writes are given for a variety of reasons, and are definitely the exception among acceptance letters rather than the standard. I think that more acceptance letters are sent out for standard RD than any other single time; there are tons more acceptances to go around, so don't worry.

Also, to clarify about EW, I'm fairly certain that Williams sends out 200 EW total, and hasn't changed anything this year. There certainly seem to be more CCers with EWs than normal, but I'd be extremely surprised if this reflects a greater number of total EW sent out.

Most importantly, I think some of you are losing perspective on what's important in admissions: getting in. Whether you get in ED, EW, RD, or off the waitlist, you have the SAME option of attending Williams (and will have the same experience while at Williams). It's the option that's important, not the settings under which this option is given to you. Sure, Early Writes are flattering, but I think any acceptance to Williams (from ED acceptance to acceptance off the waitinglist) is incredibly impressive. Williams is (in my opinion) the best school in the world, and is undeniably objectively one of the hardest to get into.

To sum things up: congrats to all who received Early Writes. For all those who didn't, don't worry! I hope to see many of you guys at Williams next year.

good call, haon
