heyyy. I was just wondering what kind of people generally get an early write from the school and when.

Williams early writes about 150 kids every year, IIRC. I got mine in mid February.

oh cool. Congrats. Did you have any specific hook? and did you get the write by post or email?

By post. I did have good grades, test scores, and recs, I play violin fairly well, come from an underrepresented state (TN), and I captained my HS soccer team. Not really any specific "hook" though.

I don't know exactly how they choose early writes, but I assume it's just the kids they want most, for whatever reasons. The idea is that the best students are going to be admitted by a lot of good schools, and by letting them know before anyone else Williams gets them excited about coming here and presumably more likely to enroll.

I understand that, if several people apply to Williams from a single school, Williams is very unlikely to send any of them a likely letter since it just creates stress and bad feelings.

Also, likely letters are nice, but the vast majority of people who are accepted don't get them, for one reason or another. Please don't get discouraged or soured on Williams if you don't receive one.

Yeah, I've heard that as well. Just want to clarify one thing: Williams early writes are full, genuine offers of admission, not the "likely letters" that some other colleges send.

Jeke,
You are correct. Early write is an actual acceptance.

In early March, I received an early write from Williams, Duke and Dartmouth on the same day. I went from stressing about "getting in to college", to stressing about "where to go". It was a good problem.

I ended up at Duke, but my brother is an early admit and is going to Williams
in the fall.

No particular reason why I got the early write. I was a top student, good test scores, 3 sport varsity athlete, etc, etc... But so is eveyone else applying to these schools. Doesn't seem to be a magic formula.

wow....(ten)

Who else sends out "likely letters?" I think Cornell does/did but I'm not quite sure. Anyone know?

Amherst has Early Writes (with early March notifications) according to a poster on their board.

Yeah, Amherst has early writes; I got mine a week or so before Williams' (around this time of year, actually). Middlebury has "likely letters".
