i guess because of the bilzzard the mailman came twice today?? anyways...my dad walked in the house with my acceptance letter! woohoo

HAHA my dad opened my letter while i was at school and texted me. i started jumping up and down screaming. then i got yelled at lol. but i'm soooo happy. swat is my first choice and i was really paranoid i wasn't going to get in. oh and i'm from new jersey.

i don't know how to do the crazy html things so i'm copying and pasting this from another thread. hope this helps someone, and reassures people you don't need perfect scores to get in.

Subjective:

Essays: kind of weird. my common app essay documented my train of thought as i completed a painting (the slide of the painting was included in my art portfolio, but i don't know if swat directly sent portfolios to their art department.) the why swarthmore essay was done after swarthmore discovery weekend and was a quasi-continuation of my common app essay.

Teacher Recs: one excellent, the other one solid.

Counselor Rec: didn't read

Hook (if any): weird essays? art portfolio?

SAT IIs: I dont remember lol
GPA: 3.79 UW, 4.28 W
Rank: 6/206

Subjective:

Essays: very strong; common app one was about how i cant narrow down and just pick one of my interest, how all my aspirations have shaped me into the person i am, while reflecting the influence from my mother. Why Swat one was depicting all the things I cant wait to do when I go there (i.e. study in Crum Henge, etc.)

Did you guys get an invitation for Ride the Tide in April? Are you guys planning on going?

SAT: Didn't take
ACT: 28 (made the same score three times in a row. Swarthmore was the only school I sent my scores to three times in a row, heh. My math is my lowest point (20 on one), English being my highest (35 on one)
GPA: 4.429 Weighted (4.0 unweighted)
Class Rank: Valedictorian (along with four others haha) out of 140

Subjective:

Essays: My main essay got good feedback from the three I let read it. I wrote about the day my mother passed away and how I changed from that day forward. My "Why Swat?" essay was pretty peripheral. I've never visited, and I don't know anyone that's ever went there. I just talked about the pamphlets and the DVD Swarthmore sent me and why it inspired me to apply to their school. They really did have an affect one me. I would say writing is my strong point.
* Teacher Recs: Both were great. My teachers are really rooting for me.
* Counselor Rec: Pretty amazing. I gave him some information about myself, and he talked with some of my teachers.
* Hook (if any): Um...I'm black? I also live in Louisiana, which I would guess is an under-represented area. I'm first-generation, low-income, all that bad stuff that colleges think is good. :) I didn't send any supplements.

Location/Person

School Type: Rural Public school (little over 600 students)
Gender: W-O-M-A-N

How long does it take to get an early write? Do they all send them out on the same day?

Okay, here are my stats.

I go to a large public school in a city in the West Coast.

SAT's: 680 CR, 800 M, 780 V, 670 Chem, 750 US History, 800 Math 2

Extracurriculars: Lots of math team, chess team, and Junior Classical League awards, mostly state awards and a handful of nationally commended awards. I also tutor kids at a local elementary school and did quite a bit of volunteering. I did a bit of National Honor Society in junior year, but I didn't put that in my application because I know that at our school the NHS chapter sucks and we did nothing exceptional. I'm also opposed to the idea that you have to have a certain GPA to join.

Essay: I think I invented a question that asked to discuss something of importance to me, and I talked about my desk in my room and how it gives me an escape from the outside world and a place where I can just think straight. For Why Swat? I just explained why. I talked about my visit (Discovery Weekend) and I said rightly that in college I want to be more involved in social activism and that I want to broaden my horizons, which in high school are limited to all the mental things I do (math, chess, even Latin are all mental). I said that Swarthmore felt like a home, and it was when I visited.

Other: I am a first-generation college student, though. I had an interview and did Discovery Weekend.

Got mine in the mail Saturday, opened it when I got home today. Do we know whether or not ALL accepted students got these? I.e., is it just a gimmick, and only the rejected people have to wait, or were the "early" people actually folks that they felt more confident about accepting?

Swarthmore website says that April 1 is the notification for RD. According to the admissions stats thread, in 2006, 31 out of 63 CC acceptees got their letter early. That's not reflective of the entire acceptance pool though.

does anyone know why they do early writes in the first place?

i got my letter yesterday and i'm thrilled but sort of confused haha
