On a thread in the parents forum, someone said that Grinnell sometimes sends early acceptances to outstanding RD applicants. Does anyone have first-hand experience with this?

My d heard from Grinnell on March 2nd (this was 2 years ago) which was a complete surprise. We didn't expect to hear anything until April.

My daughter is a first year at Grinnell. She heard from them on Feb.23 (last year). Also a surprise, we had no idea they sent early acceptances.

Wellspring and faithsmom

Thanks!

I heard about early writes on the parents forum and am hoping my son might get one. I think he's a really strong candidate: SAT 2340, ACT 34, 3.99 GPA good ECs etc. Also being a boy from VT should help with a Midwest LAC. If he gets into Grinnell, Macalester, Carleton and Oberlin, it will be a tough pick I think. He's applying to a few more selective ones, but his favorites seem to be Reed and the Midwest ones.

Wellspring, did your daughter decide to enroll at Grinnell?

faithsmom, is she having a good first year there? It looked wonderful to us when we visited.

I'm a very impatient waiter, so I'm hoping he'll hear early from Grinnell.

Oh yes, d enrolled at Grinnell. She went to the accepted student weekend and loved it.

Bethievt.. My daughter's profile is nearly identical to your son. She is having a wonderful first year, we couldn't have asked for a better experience for her.
She was also accepted at Carleton. After doing overnights at both schools, she just felt more comfortable at Grinnell. She likes the small town atmosphere and she is NEVER lacking things to do. The sense of community is very strong at Grinnell. The faculty and staff have been incredibly helpful and extremely friendly. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions.
Wellspring...how does your daughter like Grinnell?

My son is in the middle of his junior year and has never had a moment of regret about picking Grinnell. His classes are rigorous, his professors engaging, his peer group diverse. He will even spend the summer in Grinnell doing research for his advisor's new book. He is busy every weekend with everything the school imports, and the 2 clubs he and other friends started, and writing for the school papers. Of the 4 midwest LACs you mention, Bethie, this son was accepted to 2, the other son accepted at the other 2! We liked them all, each is a bit different...of course!

AS to the early write issue, he didn't hear from Grinnell early, but the admissions officer at the other of the 4 he applied to (Oberlin) sent him a very encouraging email about a month before he heard for real(his essay was a big selling point it turns out!).

My son is a sophomore at Grinnell & is extremely happy with his choice. The school has a great laid back but intellectual atmosphere & the students seem to have a terrific balance of working hard & having fun. It's also a very friendly, welcoming environment. Transport (we're from the east coast) can be a bit of a pain (lots of hanging around in Des Moines & O'Hare airports) but it's well worth the hassle. All in all, a terrific school. My son heard in February & got a nice merit scholarship. He turned down various east coast & midwestern schools (Oberlin, Vassar, Brandeis, Kenyon etc.) to attend, and really feels he made the right decision.

My son also got an encouraging e-mail from Oberlin about his essay a few weeks ago. We took it as a very good sign.

Yes, I'm sure my son would be very happy with Grinnell. If it weren't so cold out, I'd probably be standing at the mailbox now, waiting for news.

I got an early acceptance to Grinnell in the mail today, so I guess they're sending the early notifications out around now.

Congratualtions bballva!

Do they send financial aid/merit scholarship information with the acceptance?

Congratulations!

Thank you and there was scholarship aid in the letter but no need based aid.

Would you mind posting your stats bballvas?

And by the way, do you see how many points per game the Grinnell men's b ball team scores? That must be fun to watch!

My son got the early write yesterday also, with significant merit aid. I am very relieved, because I know he would be happy there. He's waiting for all results before deciding, but this relieves my stress completely. Thank you Grinnell!!
