I just read on the Macalester site that some kids got early writes from there and my son didn't, though I'm pretty sure he will eventually be admitted. I know at least one other student from his HS has applied to Mac and I'll bet they are less likely to do early admits under those circumstances. That's what I've heard, anyway, so maybe that's why some of these stellar students haven't heard early from Grinnell.

I live in New York, and got early write from Grinnell College around last week :)
here are my stats, just in case you guys r curious,,

SAT 2050 (math 750, reading 630, writing 670)
ACT 31
GPA 3.77777
SAT II: US 690, Math IIC 800, Biology 750
no interview

and yes, i got non-merit based scholarship
hope you guys the best!!!

Beth, we are from the northeast too and as far as I know, D is the only one who applied to Grinnell. She applied late though so you may be right that her application hasn't yet been considered. I am a worrier so I tend to think the worst. She has received some encouraging mail from two other schools but these are not sufficiently unambiguous to qualify as likely letters.

The part that's been hardest to watch is my D's wilting optimism as time goes on. This process has been absolutely miserable. She's always been a balanced kid who has believed she can be happy in a variety of places. She's not a kid chasing the Ivies but a kid searching for a challenging, liberal, comfortable environment. Now for the first time she's questioning her worth and wondering whether she'll have any choices this spring.

Congrats to all of you have heard early! You are all wonderful candidates.

Shoshi

The waiting was painful to me too, even though everyone was assuring me he'd have choices. If he hadn't gotten the early write, I'm sure I'd still be agonizing and checking the mailbox. When I found out about early writes on CC, I made sure not to tell my son about it, so he wasn't expecting to get early news.

I have to believe that your daughter and SBDad's son will have some good options when April 1 rolls around. They are both stellar and superior candidates. But every week feels like a month until you get the word. It's a gut-wrenching process.

For those who have gotten early writes, is there any indication of this on the Pioneer website for Grinnel when you check their admission status on-line? We're hoping for an early write for my son, but his mid-year report was only submitted on 2/23.

no indication on the Pioneer website....it still doesn't let you access the link until April 1st and they didn't give me anything official besides a casual letter and an invitation to the admitted students weekend.

good luck to all still waiting. I feel that applying early did make a difference, not because they think those who applied late lack interest, but because they are able to read your application earlier. I applied for RD, but when I visited last fall (Diversity Leadership Program), my admission officer told me she had already read my application and that she remembered me. Therefore, they make the decision earlier. Just my very underdeveloped hunch.

I don't know how to check (it's my son's), not mine, but he got his early write on 2-26, so it was probably sent 2-23. They could hardly have reviewed your sons app in time. I have no idea if they send out more than one batch. Good luck to your son!

i havent gotten a likely letter or anything but i did remember that when i sent in my SAT scores they said judging by them, i had a strong chance of admission and theyre 2220 (m800 v690 w730)...for what is worth...no much prob

I did get in early...(ACT 34, GPA 4.0, mediocre ecs). There is a chance that there would have been a delay in some of the early letters. I live about thirty miles from Grinnell, and we had a horrible ice storm last week that knocked out power for several days. I actually had to read my acceptance with a flashlight.

I started a thread in the Parents Forum on early writes and it sounds like they come out in waves as apps are rerad. So they could come any time.

DS received a skinny letter from Grinnell, Office of the President with "congratulations" stamped on the outside. Is that the "early write" letter, or something else?

Thanks!!

SBDad,
Let us know after DS opens the letter! It sure sounds like good news to me.

It sounds really good and I'm tempted to say congratulations right now. Let us know after your son has opened it.

SBDad

I can't imagine that Grinnell would send anything with congratulations stamped on it that wasn't an acceptance. Best of luck.

Yup, that's the early write! Kind of understated, huh?
Congrats!!!

SB Dad,
Definitely an early write! Congratulations!!!

Yup, that's the early write acceptance. Yea! $15k per year merit money. Double yea!

DS also got an early write today - $10K per year merit. Cool!!

Congratulations!

I thought you might hear. We just went away for 2 days and I was hoping for more good news in the mailbox, but no. However, we are thrilled with the Grinnell acceptance. A History prof from Grinnell called while we were gone, congratulating my son and inviting him to call or e-mail her with any questions.

Congrats to all!
