I noticed that a few students got early write letters from Williams. Anybody get one from Amherst yet? I think I saw on one of the boards that they used to do them - do they still? Just being curious.

I cant decide if “no news is good news” or any news would be good to hear at this point.

My S has said very little since he finished all his applications and midterm reports were sent. It’s like our whole family is in some sort of limbo!

I haven’t heard of any Amherst Early Writes this year yet.

My family and I are in limbo, too. I at least got a safety school acceptance (SUNY Geneseo :)) but Williams/Amherst are my top choices (with Williams edging out Amherst).
So March 31st could not come sooner…

I got an early write, it’s titled “Amherst College Admission Decision,” and it goes something like this:

"Dear blahblahblah:

Amherst is fortunate to have thousands of wonderful and accomplished students apply each year. A very small number, of which you are one, are especially exciting: Your passion for the life of the mind and the depth of your involvement in your school and community are what we look for as we build each Amherst class.

I thought that I got rejected up until this point. Same paragraph, btw,*

The Admission Committee and I believe that you will make a significant contribution to this very special community of scholars. Therefore, I am pleased to offer you a place in the Class of 2013 at Amherst College.

I=m writing to you before the established notification date to give you ample opportunity to consider Amherst as you make your college choice. I believe Amherst offers the best educational environment in the country: the chance for small classes taught by professors; excellent facilities for math and science and exceptional resources in all departments; an open curriculum that allows you to be responsible for the decisions affecting your academic life. Outside of class, you=ll be able to participate in the clubs and teams that Amherst offers and take advantage of the courses and activities at the other four schools in the Valley.

The official deadline for your response is still May 1, but you may send a non-refundable deposit of $400.00 (payable to The Trustees of Amherst College) at any time before that to confirm your decision to attend Amherst. I expect, of course, that you will maintain your current level of performance and continue as a citizen in good standing of your school and community, since every acceptance is contingent upon the successful completion of your obligations. You should also know that if you decide to make a deposit at Amherst, you should not do so at any other college. If you have applied for financial aid, the Office of Financial Aid will send notification of your award shortly.

Open house talk, and visiting talk. etc, etc.

I look forward to hearing from you, whatever your ultimate choice. You deserve every success.

Best wishes and congratulations from Amherst.

Sincerely,

Katharine L. Fretwell

Director of Admission/

Senior Associate Dean of Admission"

Screaming and shouting ensued (at 7 in the morning, might I add, when everyone was just about to head out to the bus stop.) I then proceeded to run out of my house without an umbrella, and outrun the already departed school bus to a red light during a heavy downpour of cats and dogs. Acceptance letters give you that much energy, ppl!

Congratulations!!!markos.alejo~~~~

Are you an applicant from mainland China or attending high school in the States?

BTW,markos.alejo, have you got a interview with an Amherst alumni?

I asked this question because I know I,as long as two other guys, got interview from Amherst.(we are from mainland China) I wonder if you are one of us…

Anyway, congratulations to your early write!!!

Was that an email? (I guess I am wondering since it was 7am)

Yeah, I’m an Ecuadorian with US citizenship living in mainland China. Sorry violaina, I didn’t get an interview I think my essays got me in, they were frigging amazing thumbs up.
Yeah, it was an e-mail.

Anybody living in the US get one? Perhaps those will be regular mail like at Williams.

My daughter received one today in the mail. Just a regular sized envelope – I thought it would be a “likely” letter but it is an acceptance!!! We are all completely speechless as last night we went through the archived threads for what days each of her colleges send notices and either by mail or email…March 3rd!!! We are in shock!

Congrats srb162! My D is a freshman, and absolutely LOVES it! Is your D home from school yet and knows the news? How great is it that you know and you can sit back and breathe now!

Thanks so much GA2012mom – How nice of you to write. I called my daughter immediately at school and luckily she was between classes. You get yourself prepared for the March 30/31 onslaught and here it is March 6th and we had no idea…So glad your daughter is loving school. Maybe mine will meet yours on the admit students overnight!

D is interested in participating in Orientation in August. I’m assuming she may be asked to host over the admits overnight also as she has a single room as of a couple of weeks ago. When is that?

I hope they release some of the transfer decisions early as well. Don’t think I can wait until June, especially when deferral deadlines are due earlier for some of the other schools I’ve already been accepted to.

Omg I got one today dated march 3, 2009. I was not expecting this at all!!! Compared to some of the incredible students on this website, my stats aren’t anything special, even compared to kids in my high school. Just some brief stats:

Don’t worry about interviews. Amherst doesn’t have interviews. Your essays are what are important.

Does anyone know how many students actually receive these early writes?

ejr1 could not have said it better. I am more than sure that all of the effort I put into crafting my essay was rewarded with a nice early acceptance letter from Amherst.

My friend got one in a small envelope… He was worried until he opened it lol
