Earth Hour - Lights on or off?

We have pretty much every light, tv, radio, computer, hair dryer, and buzz saw on just now, with only 3 minutes to go in Earth Hour. Did you and your family participate? No? Why or why not?

Yup. We (DH, DD and I) shut off all the lights, lit a few candles and sat in the kitchen. We could see everyones else's lights on in the neighborhood. Apparently we were the only ones participating on our street.

Why did we do it? Why not? At least it didn't cost anything. Of course, it won't make the slightest bit of difference. But it was fun. And much less stressful than a blackout.

Yup ... lights off here.

We did, too.

Oh yeah, we had fun. Shut down computer, stopped the dryer, everything off and lit candles and played games at the kitchen table. We had a blast!!

I just got back from going to a friend's house and then to work. I accidentally left my computer on... for 9 hours. Whoops!

Easy for me - I was out so I turned all lights off before I left - including the one near the front door - so I had to scramble a bit to unlock the door to get in :)

We had company over for dinner, so we didn't participate in Earth Hour.

We had guests over and didn't do it but truthfully, I wouldn't have done it anyway since I consider it pointless. However, since the guests were over, 'their' lights were off.

Yup, had a nice candlelight dinner with our guests. One of the neighbors turned his lights out, the others did not.

I had forgotten about shadow puppets. It has been years since I lived with kerosene lanterns which I have done. I think I am going to have one night a week like this with candles. But I keep all unnecessary electricity off anyway. It saves on the bill.

OK....dumb one here. What the heck is "Earth Hour" and how would we have known about it? I just checked my newspapers for the whole week...nothing.

Last night, around the world, people and businesses participated in EARTH HOUR to bring awareness to Global Warming. It involved turning off all lights and non-essential electronics for one hour, from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. in your local time zone. Even google participated yesterday by "turning off their lights", their sign in screen was black. There were a number of articles yesterday about who was participating. The Sydney Opera House, cities of Chicago, etc.

Hm...Thanks for the info. If I had known about it, I would have participated. Maybe they'll do it again. Seems to me this should be a weekly event.

I heard about it, but did not know the exact hour. Anyway the kids reminded us and turned off the lights. We have no problem with that.

However for the past few years I have been trying to get the kids to turn off the lights when they leave a room unless it is for a short time, without any success. An hour after end of earth hour I looked into their rooms, nobody was there but every single light is on. And this being the weekend, that means the kids are on daylight wasting time, getting up past noon and going to bed at 3 in the morning.

It is what is being done outside the earth hour that counts.
