How easy is to transfer from the college into SFS... If I cant get into SFS, I dont think I am going to georgetown. Does anyone know of anyone who could/ couldn't transfer. Do they look at your high school grades if you wanna transfer before fall? I did very well in high school... should I be ok? I dont wanna send in my deposit and then not be able to transfer... otherwise I dont think I wanna do Georgetown.

Well after getting absolutely nowhere with about 10 people from Georgetown admin... I probably wont be there next fall. Georgetown will be getting 250k less now... oh well.

Maybe you can consider transferring at the beginning of your sophomore year?

the question is, why did you apply to the college when you really wanted to be in SFS? I mean, i understand a change of heart, but that just doesn't occur a month after decisions are sent. If you wanted SFS, you should have applied there.

That said, there is a chance to transfer even before you get there in August, but you need a really good reason to do so.

Transferring after freshman year is really quite simple, just make sure to take classes in the College during your first year that also satisfy SFS requirements. You'll be fine -- almost every student that wants to transfer into SFS from the College is able to, and the Admissions department should back me up on this one.

Yah... well the truth is... I didnt intend upon going to Georgetown to begin with... nor did I know what I wanted to study when I applied... so I just did the College thinking it left me with the most options. Now that Georgetown is one of my best options (or Wash U or NU)... I realized that SFS is where its at... I like the international component especially.

I dunno... I'm leanin towards Wash U... just seemed warm and friendly and green as opposed to the east coast-ness of Georgetown. NU is out of the question... those chicago winters are so cold and windy and depressing.

I dunno... is SFS as good a program as most make it out to be?

There is absolutely nothing comparable to SFS. No schools have the number of courses in the field of study, the number and quality of faculty, and no where near the number of majors and certificates in the realm of international-whatever.

Just in terms of basic IR courses, when GTown used to still have a printed coursebook, they occupied 16 pages, which was like double the number of courses at the next two schools combined.

SFS is one of the few schools out there that will basically put you in a position to do whatever you want, whereve you want after you finish with it on your resume.

Not to mention in terms of getting a job, Georgetown is about as well connected through alumni as it gets. Similar GPAs from HYP are applying for a job at Merril Lynch along with an SFS kid, all interview really well. Who gets the job? The kid from SFS, because the program is so interdisciplinary and you graduate with such a huge set of skills that will allow you to do anything that companies really seek out SFS grads. Yeah someone graduates with awesome grades from Princeton with a solid finance and econ background, but they have no where near the breadth of knowledge someone out of SFS has. This was made explicitly clear by the seniors at our GAAP weekend who had really awesome jobs all set for themselves and all had tales of beating out Ivy Leaguers for their positions in all sorts of fields.

stockholmsyndrome23:

So I am going to Georgetown but not SFS, does that mean it's not as presitigious? Should I go somewhere else instead then? :(

Not at all. In any of the schools, Georgetown will give you not only an excellent education, at least comparable to any of its rivals, but will also put you in a better position than most schools out there for getting a job. The alumni suck at giving money to the school... but they definitely are good at finding jobs for graduates.

And honestly, any school that's been around for 217 years is going to be pretty presitigous and well connected!

That's sweet!

wolffy,
dont be so pessimistic
transferring is VERY easy...
its not a problem at all
in fact you can transfer into the SFS even before fall '06
just call up the admissions office, and explain to them...
you will just have to write an essay and you should be in...
if not...then spend a year in the college
REMOVE THE MISCONCEPTION THAT THE SFS AND THE COLLEGE ARE DIFFERENT...
for your first three years all you do is fulfilling your core reqs which are basically College liberal arts courses....lang, his, govt, theo, phil etc...
youre only two SFS classes for freshman year are PST (phiL) and Map (geog class)...
what i suggest you do is...stay in the college...fulfill your SFS core...econ, hist blah blah...
transfer for the fall and you are set
just take PST and map in your soph year...
i know a lot of people do it....
dont take such a neg attititude bec you didnt get anywhere with gtown admin...keep in mind they are very busy with stuff...
take the initiative...
if you want to go to the sfs...you can do it

As I've said before, you can transfer in the summer before you even start, I know a girl who did it last summer.

how can you do that? I have heard of transferring after the first semester but not before the fall.

I talked to the admissions office. All you have to do is write a letter to the admissions office requesting a transfer and explaining why. You also have to write the admissions essay specific to your college. Ex: MSB- Why business? Col- why Georgetown? SFS- explain a international topic. So, two sheets sent to the admissions office. And you're done! The dean has to approve it, but they're usually OK with it.

OFancy, on the contrary, you cannot transfer after first semester, you have to wait until after your first year to transfer.
