Easier to get into boarding school as a ninth or tenth grader?

Well, the title is a little self-explanatory. I'm wondering if it is easier to get in as a ninth grader, in comparison to applying for tenth grade? Evidently, they accept more ninth graders than they do tenth graders. However, there generally are also more ninth graders applying than there are tenth graders. I'm considering possibly repeating ninth grade at boarding school. My current grades aren't where I would like them to be and I would like to be able to have a "fresh start". Do you think it would be easier to get in as a ninth or tenth grader?

I think it depends on the school. Some reserve a significant number of spots for tenth graders, some do not.
Are you just starting the application process now for entry this fall?

I’ve already sent in all my applications (except for some of the ones that are due on Feb. 1st). I’m thinking that I might call the schools and ask them to change my grade on my application.

I believe that, at some schools anyway, it’s more than just about the numbers. At some schools, the more limited 10th grade spots are reserved for students who fill specific needs - e.g. a cellist or a hockey player. In 9th grade, in contrast, the school can also take the really interesting kid who just has lots of potential, but isn’t yet an accomplished musician, athlete, etc. And I really think this does vary from school to school . . . but I’d guess it’s somewhat analogous to college, where it’s apparently a lot easier to get in as a freshman than as a transfer student.

For a kid who’s an accomplished athlete, maybe it matters less. But for the kid whose talents or interests are more unusual, my guess is they he or she would have better luck applying to 9th grade than to 10th.

But this is my opinion only, based on what I’ve learned from a limited number of schools - your experience may be entirely different.

starkali - If at all possible, I’d suggest contacting the AOs who did your interviews and ask them what they think. It will have to be your decision, but they might be able to give you some advice.
