I know this is a really common, basic question but I tried looking through the transfer 101 thread and got swallowed up in it. As a very general rule of thumb, does one have better chances applying to transfer to a university for sophomore year or junior year?

Bumpity-bump.

It would depend on two factors:

Whether a school accepts more soph or jr transfers. I'm not sure any school states this, but if they did, it would make a difference.

How well you did in HS vs. college. When you apply to be a soph transfer, you would have only completed 1 sem/qt of college when you apply, so you will be assess mainly on your HS record. While, as a jr transfer, more weight will be given to what you've accomplished in college. Thus, IMO, it is more realistic to transfer "up" to a more selective school as a jr than as a sop transfer if you weren't a competitive applicant as a fr.
