Easiest Campus Jobs at the University of Michigan (So I can study!)

Hey all!

Trying to find a campus job where I can still get a lot of studying done (i.e. checking in library books at a counter etc...) Any ideas?

I'm trying to do this through the Work-Study program at U of M. Work Study is a type of financial aid where they'll pay you more per hour your work if you receive it (to my understanding).

Thanks!
Chairman

There are a lot of department libraries that hire work study students, i.e. Psychology, Religion, and Geriatrics. I would suggest trying for one of those if you want to see if you could get some study time in. But at some point, try to take fuller advantage of the opportunity and look for something where you will learn and grow.

One benefit of work study is that you have some opportunities to work in departments that other non-work study students would not. There may be research opportunities, etc. Go to the office and do some research on what is available. Best or most sought after jobs are taken early.

I’d ask in the U of M forum.

Whoa… No it’s not more per hour. It just means that your wages are subsidized by the federal government. If you work in a caf or something, you’re getting paid the same whether it’s work study funds or not. I make much more at my non-ws jobs than my ws job.

Thanks all.

Thanks Romanigypsyeyes. I’m reposting now. Should I delete this thread?

That would be interesting…

Try being the employee whose only job is to scan the id’s of students entering the exercise facilities and periodically clean the equipment.

Keep in mind that the more time you spend doing menial labor, the less time you have to attend career related internships that will make you more competitive.

OP is looking for a work study job where he/she may have some time to study. It’s possible to find those by working in the department libraries, etc. Taking that type of work study job will not prevent OP from obtaining an internship. I would only suggest OP look for other types of work study at some later date, such as a research position, etc.

I can’t answer about U of M specifically, but as others have said, jobs at a library or in the campus gym might be good. Some of the jobs at our student center are also said to be good for studying (like the game room or the box office, etc.).

You should probably try to avoid office jobs, the kinds of places that are open from 9 to 5. Those are the types of places that will probably put you to work. But things like the library or gym that have evening or weekend hours are more likely to be the kinds of things where you can sit behind a desk and swipe IDs or something.

I work in my department office at the front desk, answering phones and filing things. It’s very busy around lunch, but i always offer to work in the mornings when it’s quiet and I can get my work done. I think the library would be your best bet.
