I hear that everything is pretty close so I don't need a car but should I really leave my car at home. I have to pay for my own gas so I don't know. I also have a Longboard (long skateboard) and that can get me to classes or should I get a bike? Is the campus really hilly to where I won't be able to stop on my board. What should I do?

Isla Vista ia flat plateau about 30 feet in elevation, separated from the beach by a bluff.

Longboard would probably work, but I think a bike would be the best way to go. It seems like all of Santa Barbara (even the city) is bike-accessible

How to be car-free in Santa Barbara

Buy a bike!!! Have you been to sb? There are bikes EVERYWHERE and it is the main transportation system there. Bike lanes and everything!

get a cheap bike, BTW. You don't want to have an expensive bike that tempts thieves. In fact you might want to consider buying a cheap bike at the police auction of abandoned bikes; see http://police.ucsb.edu/crime_prevent.html and call to see if they're doing one in the fall.

You will want a bicycle. A longboard will probably work, but a bicycle will get you to the place that you want to go to considerably faster.

Generally speaking, bicycles won't stop for you when you are crossing bike paths, so at peak times, it might take a while to cross the bike path.

I agree with Iamtheevilest about the non-stopping bikes. I have seen people drinking coffee, talking on their cell phones, and riding a bike all at the same time so I do not think they want to stop for pedestrians. There are a LOT of bikes on campus and sometimes I wonder if bikes get lost because there are so many! I have seen nice bikes on campus, but they are generally always locked up really well. Most defenitely buy a bike and maybe bring a car if you think you will be leaving campus a lot, but I think everything is pretty much in biking distance.
