Can someone tell me if the desks in East and South Halls have a drawer with a built in key lock, or if you need to bring your own key or combination lock? Thanks.

We went to FTCAP today and I read in one of the papers we received that one desk drawer locks. You need to bring your own combination lick.

Thanks. Also went to FTCAP last week. A lot of material, so I must have missed that information. Thanks again.

Was your student able to give you access to their elion account? The parent/other-access isn’t on my daughter’s menu. She looked at the left side menu once she logged in - is that where it should be?

Strange. Yes, it was there on the left side menu and there was no problem with it. If she fully validated her ID card at FTCAP, I believe it should appear. The menu went from almost nothing to a complete one upon our return from FTCAP, to include the Parent/Other option.

Her ID card was activated. At least I think so, I put money on it and she used it to buy some Penn State swag while we were there. So, I would think it’s activated.

Also, her elion page shows her schedule now.

Ok. Found the problem. She was using her old password and not the new Access password.

I’m glad to hear that you found the issue. In my opinion, based on looking at the different PSU websites and links out there, the number of sign-ons and accounts that a student must maintain in order to stay on top of things is a little daunting. Welcome to the 21st century I guess, but wow…

I agree. She had to use the ID originally set up when she sent in her application. What is the point of making them set up a new password? Although, I wasn’t with her so maybe she could have used the original password and didn’t realize that. Oh well, that’s just one of many hurdles she will have to pass. I can’t wait to see how next year goes. Hopefully, I’ll be pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately, Penn State does in one day what most schools do in two. There was so much information that I felt very overwhelmed. I can imagine that the kids’ presentation was just as overwhelming. Way too much info in too short a time. At least we have a couple of months to process everything.

I suppose that’s the bottom line for them, complication is part of life and they need to learn how to manage everything in today’s linked up world. There is so much information out there, and I’ve been trying to get my D prepared by discovering some of the links myself and having her put them on her computer and understand why the link is there. There’s even an account that they have to set up for making advising appointments. Seems to go on and on… I guess your daughter is starting in the fall, so you do have some time to try and smooth the transition. My daughter is starting summer session on 6/24, and will be away for a week, so not much time left for me. Oh well, we do the best we can and then they have to take control and figure it out, right?

Yes, my D starts in the fall. She is away for senior week now. I can’t imagine trying to get ready for June 24th. But, it’s probably harder for the parents than the kids. I tend to over-think things, whereas my D pretty much just goes with the flow. Less stress for her, makes me crazy. But, you’re right. They need to be able to take care of things themselves and if we’ve done our job, they will be fine. Good luck to your D.

Yes, getting reading for June 24th has been a little crazy, and I still don’t think she quite knows what she’s in for. She is anxious about it, but I’m hoping that being in the LEAP program will help. Time will tell. She definitely isn’t the go with the flow type when it comes to starting college at PSU, she’s as apprehensive as a kid can get. I keep helping her and encouraging her and pushing her along, and then I will sit back and hope that she can fly. Good luck to you too Kvillemom.

Did she read through Preface, the freshmen magazine? We got ours in the mail, and I was pleasantly surprised to see they are not starting class until Wednesday – there’s Sunday Leapers’ meetings, and then Monday there are college meetings to make sure you are still registered the way you should be, etc., and then Tuesday there are other LEAP things plus some free time. Once she gets here, she’ll feel better. Do you know which LEAP pride she’s going to be in?

Thanks. I know of that magazine, read through it myself. I am encouraging her to read it as well. I knew about the time between move-in and the start of classes, and so does she. I thought that would definitely help if she used the time well to adjust herself and try and meet people and settle into the whole situation. She’ll be in the Education Pride. Just hoping that my expectations of LEAP meet the reality for her, because if it does, that will be the start that she needs. I’m sure everyone feels that way to an extent, just more so if your child is on the shy and anxious side.
