East and west split?

Just visited duke and liked it a lot but still a little wary of the divided campus. Any current students or grads want to share their thoughts? Thanks!

I graduated a long time ago ('89), but back then it wasn’t a big deal riding the bus. As an engineer all my classes were on West, but I lived on East for my first two years. It was a little like “going to work” every morning then returning home for studying after the day was over.

They run extra buses during peak times so you never had to wait more than a couple minutes. Even if you found yourself on West after the buses stopped, it was only a twenty minute walk on well-lit sidewalks.

There was more to do off-campus near East, if that appeals to you.

It’s not a big problem really.

1) Like rmldad said, during peak times in the early morning and late afternnon buses run very frequently and often you see overlapping buses at either end.

2) During normal operations you never have to wait more than 5-10 minutes for a bus and you’ll learn to factor in an extra 15-20 minutes door to door to get to classes.

3) As a freshmen, you won’t be going back and forth between east and west during the day unless you’ve got classes on the two campuses or you’ve got a big break. So really, most of the time it’s like going to work. You go to west in the morning, and you come back in the afternoon.

4) The only time it’s a bit inconvenient is at night or on weekends when you have to take the C-2 that also runs through central campus and they don’t run as often. But then again, you could always check out a bike from the free bikeshare program and ride over (it’s 1 mile distance), run over if you like to exercise, walk over, or drive over (you can park in a lot of the lots for free at night and on weekends, my favorite is the one behind allen right off the main quad across from the library).

Overall, like rmldad mentioned, I actually liked the separation between academics and college life that the different campuses provided. It makes it a lot easier to manage your life. I also appreciated the mandatory relax time that you get on the bus that you can use to just sit, think, stare out the window, listen to your iPod, etc. It’s pretty great.

Thanks a lot!
