East Asian/Asian Studies?

I've just finished my junior year and am now seriously looking at colleges. My question is - which colleges are really known for or have a strong Asian studies department. I'd like to focus on China and take Chinese in college (I will also be taking lessons locally this summer and through my senior year).

I already know Middlebury has a very strong language program. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

UPenn and P'ton both have strong programs.

Williams, Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, and Hamilton all have good Chinese programs as well.

Temple U has a great East Asian studies program.

i heard that wesleyan is really good for that stuff.

you hear that? my man hazmat said upenn. maybe that's where you should apply, my dear friend thestillpoint

Perhaps go to a Chinese college? I don't know about China, but in Taiwan elite universities all instruction is in English, so you'd be able to understand the teacher but also be in a Chinese environment.

U of Washington has a great asian studies program in addition to a very good chinese program

You would get better information, OP, if you were more specific about the type of college you were looking for. Sure, HYP etc. have great programs in Asian Studies, but they have great programs in every field, and they’re not likely to admit you in the first place.

What are your scores?
Will you need financial aid?
What size student body would you prefer?
Where in the country would you like to study?
etc.

With all of that said, I too am interested in Asian Studies, so from my application experience I would recommend that you consider Emory, Washington U in St. Louis, and Georgetown.
