East Asian Studies emphasis?

Alright, I'm a junior at my high school and I'm looking at colleges.

I've been taking Japanese for two years now and I'd really like to continue this through college and possibly the rest of my life; I may even take Chinese next year, though I already know a dialect of it (I'm asian myself). I know that I will either have a minor in Japanese or East Asian Studies or a double-major with another subject (I'm not completely sure yet, biology or english?)

My first choice, Wesleyan University is known to have a fantastic East Asian studies program (with an "authentic Japanese tea room" that I've yet to see for myself, but hopefully soon). Dartmouth also has a fairly good Japanese program, but I'd like to broaden my search a bit. So far, those two schools are the only ones I really want to go to concerning this subject.

So basically I'm asking if there are other "well-known" schools that have a good program in those areas. Thank you for your time (:

OSU and SFSU came to my thoughts from an old thread on cc. U should do a search for them, there are several. I don’t know your geographic preferences, but SFSU is in the middle of San Francisco Asian Community.

Thank you for your suggestions. My preferences for the locations is broad, I would like to go anywhere except where I live (Arizona, which if you haven’t noticed, isn’t the best place for schools, save for ASU’s Barrett and possibly NAU). I’ve mostly been looking in the east, and the New England area, but anywhere is fine, i suppose.

As for Oregon State and San Francisco, Oregon’s sent me information on their college, but not about their programs for asia, so thank you for letting me know. I’ve added those two to my list (:

Also, I completely forgot to mention that I’m pretty biased for LACs, private and a bit exclusive.

You don’t indicate your stats or your financial situation. Both are important in getting suggestions for reasonable alternatives.

I haven’t taken the SATs or the ACTs yet, but I will take them either this fall or spring of next year. My GPA is 3.8 unweighted, and my ECs include 2 years of Asian Awareness, 2 (possibly 3) years of Yearbook, 45 hours of library volunteering (hopefully I’ll get to 150 hours in the next year or so), Key Club, Mustang Pals, and Invisible Children club.

I also am taking classes at my local community college with an ACE scholarship, which allows me to get 24 college credits (which I am aware that I most-likely will not be able to transfer if I go out of AZ). My AP/honors classes have been AA Soph english, Honors Geometry, AP Language and Comp, Honors Algebra 2, AP US History, and CP Chem. I’ll be taking Japanese 3 next year, AP bio, and Pre-calc.

The PSATs I took last year were 58 for Critical reading, 56 for the math portion, and 58 for writing.

OSU=Ohio State Univ. It has a large Asian Study group, others like UVA, St. Johns and Seton Hall, they all have my relatives attending or teaching there.

Oh, sorry, my mistake. I’ll go look there as well. Thanks!

If your SATs track with your PSATs, Wesleyan and Dartmouth are going to be reaches.

It probably won’t meet your requirements for prestige, but Wittenberg has a very good East Asian Studies program and would probably be a safety school for you.

Look into Earlham [Courses | Earlham College](http://www.earlham.edu/japanesestudies/courses)

Thank you for all your recommendations, everyone. I will look into Wittenberg and Earlham right now.

Oberlin has great East Asian Studies.

Thank you! You all have helped me so much in choosing colleges, at least for this moment, and colleges that I will consider in the future, probably in my senior year.

I’ve decided on Wesleyan overall, because it is my dream school and has all the things that I am interested in. I’ll also most likely be applying at Dartmouth and Oberlin. My safeties so far are Whittenburg, which really does have a great East Asian studies program, and possibly Earlham. (:

University of California at San Diego. California is looking for out of state tuition. It’s also an incredible program.
