How are the east asian languages and literature departments?

I would assume they are great since UW has strong humanities, and seattle is city with lots of asian culture, since it has historically been similar to sanfrancisco when it comes to immigration.

Anyone took japanese there?
Chinese?

I have a friend who is studying Asian Languages and Literature. He might be able to give you some insight. Send me an email if you want me to get you in touch with him.

My son took Japanese, although he isn't any more. The classes were fine, although he ended up waiting a year to start. He'd tested into some intermediate level, but wasn't able to get into that class in the fall of his freshman year.

I would expect the East Asian lit and history depts. to be excellent. I know the library has been acquiring a lot of materials in those areas, and there'll be a visiting librarian from Korea this coming year.

I'm majoring in International Studies and Asian Studies with Japanese minor at UW and I have really liked my programs so far. There is a wide variety of classes to choose from compared to some other universities, and the professors are on the most part very helpful. The Jackson School which holds the Asian Studies major is quite prestigious and I believe the Asian Language and Lit department is also known for being good.

Seassia, thanks for sharinging info from an actual student in the department!
