warblersrule, lol! Thanks for your post.

This is yet another Bogus ranking, and it’s not the only one…

The New York Times - 11/14/10 - Questionable Science Behind Academic Rankings.

Ann Mroz, editor of Times Higher Education magazine, issued a statement congratulating the Egyptian university, adding “any institution that makes it into this table is truly world class.”

But researchers who looked behind the headlines noticed that the list also ranked Alexandria fourth in the world in a subcategory that weighed the impact of a university’s research — behind only Caltech, M.I.T. and Princeton, and ahead of both Harvard and Stanford.

Phil Baty, deputy editor of Times Higher Education, acknowledged that Alexandria’s surprising prominence was actually due to “the high output from one scholar in one journal” — soon identified on various blogs as Mohamed El Naschie, an Egyptian academic who published over 320 of his own articles in a scientific journal of which he was also the editor

How do the deferrals at UNC-W work? Do you have to submit additional materials or is it a waiting game until a certain date?

North Carolina is Da Bomb, so no matter which school she picks, I think she’ll love it. We have lived here for 21 years, and we would never, ever go back to the Frozen North (Massachusetts in our case).

Several of my colleagues went to ECU and loved it. The colleagues in question are graphic designers…apparently, ECU has a fantastic art and design program. I asked one colleague about ECU’s Party School reputation. She said it was really easy to avoid the party scene – it’s a big enough school so that one can find one’s own social circle. She met her husband at ECU, and neither one of them was part of the party scene.

I don’t know anyone who graduated from UNC Wilmington, but I can ask around – at an NC-headquartered company, there’s bound to be some folks from just about every NC school!

Oops, didn’t realize this was an old thread. LOL, I keep doing that.

warblersrule, that was hilarious.

ncmentor – that is illuminating indeed!

May I PM you? DS is trying to decide among several UNC-system schools – and your “handle” indicates that you are an expert on NC institutions!

Thanks in advance!

I don’t know if UNCW is much different from other schools in the way it handles defferrals. My advice (assuming your a HS senior applying to be a 1st year freshman) would be to make sure your 1st semester grades from senior year are good, notify UNCW of any new achievements/honors/awards, and let them know that they are your number 1 school. You could do this in a letter and mail it to the admissions office. Hopefully, that may help.

“May I PM you?” - Yes… You can - now that I cleared some of the stuff out of my inbox. Sorry if anyone else tried…

“an expert on NC institutions!” - Expert, na… But I do know a fair amount about their pros and cons…

I’m have family members that have attended both E Carolina and UNCW and can offer a comparison.

ECU is good academically and but not difficult to get admitted to. It is a large university with about 24,000 students. It does have a party school reputation, but for those that want to focus on academics, they can find excellent instruction. They have great school spirit for their Pirate football team and take it serious. (They like to talk about beating NC State in football) ECU is located in Greenville, NC (POP 75k) which is about 100 miles east of Raleigh. The city has several good spots for nightlife that students enjoy but some areas close to downtown have crime issues. Kids just need to be smart about it and they will be fine. The students are your typical friendly Southerners many which are from small towns in eastern NC. Fraternities & Sororities are active at ECU.

UNCW is extremely difficult to get admitted in to and is academically strong. But that is because they are only five minutes from Wrightsville Beach and it has become a popular school. UNCW has 13,000 students. They do not have football but have great school spirit for their Seahawk basketball team which has experience solid success. (They like to talk about beating Southern Cal in the NCAA tournament) UNCW is located in Wilmington, NC (POP 100k) which is about 125 miles south of Raleigh. The nightlife in downtown Wilmington is big since (much like Charleston) it has a active historic district on the Cape Fear River with nice restaurants and clubs. Many Movies & TV shows like Dawson’s Creek & One Tree Hill have been filmed in Wilmington. Fraternities & Sororities are active at UNCW.

They are obviously both state universities and the state of NC limits the number of students from outside NC to 16%, so getting admitted from out of state is always harder. I hope this helps.

UNCW did a great job helping me find a career.

I have been to both schools. I would pick UNCW over ECU anyday. UNCW has better academics, beach is five minutes away, Wilmington is a great town, there is always things to do, UNCW basketball games are really fun, night life is better (if that interest you), about an hour from Myrtle Beach, people are really friendly, the campus feels very safe. I could keep going.

^Couldn’t agree more. Not that ECU is a bad school, but unless money’s an issue or there’s a better program at ECU, I would go with UNCW.
