Does anyone here know about East Carolina? When I applied to it a few months ago, I really only had it as a safety school in case my other schools didn’t accept me. But EC is coming more and more of an attractive option. I haven’t visited their campus, but from pictures it looks stunning. Their sports fans are hardcore and support their team even if the team sucks which is awesome. Their tuition is low for even an out of state student. Just a few questions about ECU:
- How do you view their computer science program?
- How is campus life?
- I have a 3.8 GPA and got an 1840 on the SAT. Is that enough to get accepted into ECU? Reading more about it it seems that people got rejected with almost the same scores as me.
- How does it compare to other schools I applied to: Syracuse, UCONN, Binghamton, Stony Brook, etc?
- How are the dorms and food?
Thanks for your help!
Welcome @jamesa123 .My daughter is a Freshman at ECU, and it was also her safety school, but they won her over during the whole process and she loves it there. I would say apply, and if you get in - schedule a visit. While the majority of students are from NC, they do attracted many OOS students with their tuition and southern charm. My daughter has many friends from the DC area and NY.
- How do you view their computer science program?
ECU’s program is becoming a strong competitor here in NC. My friends that work in hiring in CS and Engineering say that they enjoy recruiting at ECU. ECU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. The East Carolina University Department of Computer Science is chaired by Dr. Venkat Gudivada and confers the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Master of Science in Computer Science and Master of Science in Software Engineering.
- How is campus life?
Most students are from NC, and mostly eastern NC, but most students stay on campus every weekend and there is always something going on. Football is crazy fun. The town is small but they are all about the students and the university. Weather is nice, and the school is very near the river and not far from the coast. While they are moving away from the “party school” image of the past, it is not s dull party scene by any stretch.
- I have a 3.8 GPA and got an 1840 on the SAT. Is that enough to get accepted into ECU?
I think your scores are in line for admission. I think they have a 3.2 GPA min. this year. I guess it might be harder for OOS, I am unsure.
- How does it compare to other schools I applied to: Syracuse, UCONN, Binghamton, Stony Brook, etc.? ~ I really don’t know anything about these schools, sorry.
- How are the dorms and food?
I never hear anyone say anything good about the food at any school – but they have an unlimited meal plan and also offer any restaurant choices on campus, Chick Fil-A, Chili’s, etc. My daughter lives in a living learning community for the Honors College, it is located in the newest dorm, which is like a hotel, so she loves it. Freshman are required to live on campus and there are many choices.
Good luck, and keep up posted.
I’m from North Carolina and yes East Carolina is very popular here. With your SAT and GPA you’re basically guaranteed to get in. ECU is usually people’s safety school.
- I don’t know much about their computer science program
- They’re always parties every weekend. Not known for sports but there’s always something to do there.
- A lot of my friends have 3.5 GPA and lower and got in. They’ve gotten C’s and D’s before and still managed to get in. Maybe it’s because your OOS?
- Binghamton and Stonybrook is more academically challenging.
- Don’t know much about food
If you ask any high school student in NC about ECU, the first thing that they are going to say is that it’s a party school. It’s not exactly known for its academics but I’m sure it’s good but it is more associated to throwing crazy parties.
North Carolina has a lot of “designated” schools. UNC is the designated medical school, NC State is the designated, UNC Asheville is the designated LAC, and ECU is the designated party school. The academics are still pretty great especially the science program. It’s everyone’s safety but that not a bad thing. Almost everyone who goes to ECU loves it!
- I don't know much about the CS program.
- Campus life is really good and there is always something going on. ESPECIALLY if it's football season! Also tons of parties every week.
- Are you OOS? Your scores are above average for instate ECU applicants. ECU is very tough on OOS applicants.
- Personally, the other schools you listed are more academically challenging. ECU isn't known as the most academic school but the academics are still really nice.
- I've heard the dorms are nice. The Hill has the best dorms on campus. The food is okay. I've had better and I've had worse. If you ever come to Greenville you have got to try Sup Dogs!
Your SAT and GPA pretty much guarantees that you’ll get in (if your OOS the chance may be smaller but with your scores you’ll still get in). I’m going to ECU next year and I’ve visited the campus several times. The town of Greenville is nice and homey but the suburban areas can be dangerous. Luckily there is a hospital every 5 feet in Greenville. You should definitely apply for some financial aid. ECU is pretty inexpensive compared to other NC schools.
@jamesa123 which school did you pick?
