EAST COAST: Has your school canceled yet for tomorrow?

Or is the storm already past you?
If so, how was it?

I live in an NYC suburb (in the Hudson Valley) and go to school in Manhattan. Neither my home school district nor my school has canceled yet. (My school is even having its open house today--- last time it was also during that big storm and people came anyway for some reason...)
People around here were stocking up last night on dry ice, cases of water, canned goods, Sterno cans, batteries in the supermarket... and my mom was waiting in line with them buying ice cream and hot fudge. (For my sweet 16. And nothing says "sweet" 16 like hot fudge. Mmmmmm.)
Anyway, end irrelevant rant- just want to know what to expect.
Cheerio, and don't get too wet!

I live in Maryland, and we’re are going to get hit pretty hard lol. We’re getting 75 mph winds. So far, school has not said a word. My guess is that we are not going to school It’s going to be too dangerous. Prince George’s County’s schools are closed, but not my county…it’ll probably be broadcasted at the last minute tomorrow morning.

There was a half day Thursday and no school Friday. It wasn’t that bad. There was only one point that was scary as heck. It was 7AM on Friday and I thought there was going to be a tornado because of how loud it got

UPDATE: Winds for Maryland are predicted to get up to 80, heavy rain and flooding. On Tuesday, we’re going to get some snow also.

I sincerely hope that power does not go out on Long Island. I have college apps to submit! :O

logicx: I think colleges are having extended deadlines- contact them for confirmation.
All I hope is that it’s not like last year, when my family lost power from Sunday to Thursday in freezing temperatures… not fun. Not fun at all.
If that happens again I’m skedaddling to the nearest friend who’s got power and STAYING there.

Not yet, likely because it’s not even going to come up here at all, by the looks of it. We’re not under a flood alert but we’re under wind alert and a state of emergency, but none of the paths are near here.

Plus my school is notorious for not cancelling school if it’s possible. I can recall multiple times where we’ve had more than a foot of snow fall the night before and we were the only town within a 30-minute radius that was still open.

My school tends to consider the immediate conditions, so if it’s going to be snowing heaviest from 1AM to 7AM they’ll just have a delayed opening and if it’s going to be heaviest in the afternoon, an early dismissal.

There have been times when they stayed open anyways and last year there was a snowstorm so bad that I couldn’t get home at all, because the wind was blinding and it kept knocking me around. Luckily my mom (who works in the next state over) was sent home from work and she came and got me like 90 minutes later. I don’t even want to consider the alternative.

NYC, no. But bus and train service is shutting down tonight so it’s not like I can get there anyway. The mayor is having a conference right now so if schools are closing we should find out in a few.

nope. the board REALLY hates canceling school. as soon as we use one of our snow days, they make us open on a vacation day “just in case.” last year they gave us back those days because the student government kept bugging them about it.

Just announced: no school tomorrow!

Which means that even though I’m in private school, I probably don’t have either, because the GW might close and half the school comes in on the subway or train.
Not to mention that a bunch of people are being evacuated…

Not yet. I’m in New Jersey, and I think we’re supposed to get tropical storm-like conditions. In which case, school should be closed.

I’m too far north, I’m guessing, to warrant a day off. Sad, because I’d love the time to work on college apps.

Not yet. They better though because it’s supposed to pass right over us (and I want a day off).

Yup. & Tuesday. I’m in the mid-northeast part of CT.

@Hannah: That’s what I did. I think we lost power for ~10 days, so I just lived with my friend for a week. She was the only one of my friends in town who had power because she lives near the local hospital.

My school’s cancelled until Thursday. Wow!

Yup, my school just cancelled.

Not fair, my school hasn’t said anything yet, on the website they’re explaining what actions they’re taking and will issue notices via E-mail, texts, Twitter, and local TV stations.

lldm: Last time, friend of mine went to another friend for the weekend and ended up snowbound in the other kid’s house for a week.

Nothing said about Virginia…well, Virginia Beach is probably canceled, but I live in more southwest VA, so they said that wind and rain is a definite, and possibly snow. My area just missed the mark for 4+ inches, but they said 1 or so inches may be possible. It keeps changing, so if they do cancel, it`ll be tomorrow or Tuesday.
