Great idea about contacting the oboe instructor. Even if the instructor has no influence on acceptances, he/she may be able to coach the application process.

tawtaw4now – I am curious as to what your D hopes a BS in biology will lead to. There are multiple threads on CC right now that are discussing (and bemoaning) that relatively poor job prospects for scientists, particularly those for biologiests and chemists. I am not one of those who preaches avoidance of majors where current job prospects are poor and near future prospects are uncertain. However, I do think that is a factor that should at least be confronted and dealt with sooner rather than later. Is your daughter’s interest in biology a passion or more of a current interest? Can you see her changing her mind as to a major a year or two down the road?

^^she actually would love to do an undergrad major in microbiology or virology…but only a few schools offer that as an undergrad…NC State and Clemson being two that are closest…Penn State has very bio-technical undergrad majors as well…but she knows if she continues liking it she will need to go to grad school…she wants to study the effects of bacteria on cells…she has also considered toxicology…but she is going to have to start taking classes before she is going to be able to determine which direction she really wants to go…currently she just finished taking chemistry and AP Bio and her senior year she is signed up for AP Chem, Independent Science Research with her AP Bio instructor and environmental science …only time will tell : )…but I see her staying in the science field…if that doesn’t work I could see her doing something music-related…no engineering, computer science or business for her, lol!

tawtaw-have her look into Truman in Missouri. The pre-med adviser there had/is doing research that is related to what your DD wants to study. The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is also a place to consider. Again, biology professors doing that kid of research. Both schools have marching bands/band programs for non-majors. The Eau Claire band is huge and has an amazing music department. I know they aren’t east coast but there are airplanes :D.

We have a music/bio guy in our house. We’re a few years out but some schools we are considering (also needing merit aid) are:
- University of South Carolina – seems to have good merit aid for out of staters and a good honors college
- Emory –
- Ohio University which has a AWESOME marching band! (Fond memories of living in married student housing and listening to them serenade us every August evening around sunset.)
