My D is looking for urban schools preferable in the NY area. Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia are good options too. We live in the west coast and don't have much information about schools in the east coast. The majors she is interested are Theater (acting), English, Communications and/or possible Business. The ranking of interest is in the same order as listed. She is looking for a BA (not BFA) in Theater with a strong Liberal Arts education and a second major and possible a minor in the areas listed above. The school size is not as important as the quality of the education. Location is important; she would like access to the city and it can be a suburban school with good transportation to the city.

Regarding my D... her SAT score is 2070, GPA 3.7, will be a National Hispanic Scholar, 6 APs by end of Senior year, a couple of subject tests in the upper 600+ so far, will have good essays since she is a great writer, academic summer programs, has 1300+ hours of community service (most of it at a community theater in our neighborhood), and many performances in plays since elementary school. She will have 3 years in the Select Jazz Choir at her High School by graduation time. We dont qualify for need aid and are not able to pay full Ivy tuition; she qualifies for some merit aid and would like to take advantage of it, if possible.

I appreciate your input to help my D with this very important decision in her life.

A good choice for your D would be Fordham University. It's known for it theater program [at Lincoln Center] and also well known for it's Business [has a seperate business school your D can apply to as a freshman]. It's located in NY [2 campuses : 1 in the Bronx, 1 in Manhattan]. With her stats, she's a good candidate.

My dd has similar interests and practically the same stats--she hasn't taken as many APs because our high school is small (600 kids) and doesn't offer too many APs, but they do offer honors courses and she's taken 3 each year (math, english, and science). In the cities you mention, some of the best drama programs are BFA programs--NYU and BU have great drama departments. We've looked at smaller LACs close to NY--Skidmore, Conneticut College, Vassar. We also went to Barnard (which is where the drama program for both Columbia and Barnard is housed) and dd liked it. She really wants to be in NYC. All of the LACs had great facilities--several performance spaces and lots of opportunities for students to participate, both majors and non-majors. My older dd graduated from Tufts and she had a good friend who was a theatre major there. I don't know that it's known for it's theatre programs, but this girls is working for a repertory theatre in the San Francisco area now. She was a tech person--costume design.

Take a look at George Washington's Theatre and Communications programs. GW offers a $15,000 merit Presidential Arts Scholarship in Theatre, Music and several other arts categories. Washington D.C. has The Kennedy Center and many other theatres/cultural venues.

Only problem with Emerson, which does have amazing acting and communications programs, is that the Acting degree is a BFA. Also, Emerson isn't great in the sciences end of a liberal arts education.

Brandeis, just outside of Boston, with public and school-sponsored transportation into the city, does offer a BA in Theater Arts, with an Acting track within the program, and is an excellent all-around Liberal Arts school (although nominally a university, it's more like an LAC). Brandeis was also founded on the idea of social justice and community service, so her interests there may be quite helpful to her.
