East Coast to Pomona?LAX?

Couple of questions - I'm working with a student interested in Pomona, but before she applies ED for class of 2015 (2011 High School Grad), her dad wants her to see the school. It would only be the student travleing there - Logistically is it possible?

She would need to fly from the East Coast (either Philly or Newark, JFK). Too young to rent a car.

How do the East Coast students get there?

If possible I would try to fly into Ontario airport vs. LAX. Cab ride is very quick.
Another option would be into Long Beach, tiny airport but Jet Blue is a carrier that flies there, and shuttle from there, which is about 45 minutes, I think. I would avoid LAX, due to traffic issues.

We are from the Midwest so I can’t tell you which airport to depart from, but I do suggest flying her into the Ontario airport. It’s much easier to navigate and not a bad shuttle ride to campus. I would not send a high school student to LAX if you can avoid it.

Thank you both!

Great News for us - SouthWest goes to Ontario! There are some great prices on the PHL to Ontario flights - only downside is layovers.

Longhaul,
Our son travels solo on Southwest with layovers to Ontario. He much prefers the layovers to landing at LAX and dealing with the long shuttle ride through traffic. Ontario is a very easy airport to navigate.

Over the four years, H and/or I flew into both LAX and ONT depending on what our itinerary was (sometimes I was there for business as well). ONT is definitely much easier in terms of access (including rental car access) and getting to and from campus. LAX, though, had better schedules and sometimes better fares.

D used ONT for getting back and forth from home. Sometimes, one of her friends could pick her up from the airport. JetBlue used to fly into ONT as well.

Thanks All! I passed the info onto the students family. Also help the Mom set up a CC account. Said student is very happy. Said Dad is satisfied, but I get the feeling the student’s Mom was hoping the travel plans would be difficult and make the student re-think cross-county. Not happening.

From Newark (Continental, non-stop to LAX). Pomona made a deal with SuperShuttle for a discount and the shuttle drops students off right at the admissions office, in the center of the campus.

I use kayak.com to search for good airfares and then go straight to that airline’s site.

It’s a bit of a drive from LAX to Claremont. Could be 2 hours + with bad traffic. Ontario airport is way closer, 10 minutes maybe.

Definitely true - and we were glad we could use the carpool lanes when we did hit traffic! On the flip side, I’ve made the LA (the city, not the airport) to Claremont run in 30ish minutes when I was going against traffic.
