I really, really prefer the east coast. This is very biased, however, since the furthest west I've been is West Virginia. As far as colleges go, I couldn't have even considered west coast schools if I had wanted to-- travel expenses just wouldn't have been doable.

The west coast seems to pride itself on its seemingly tropical winters, and that's great for the west coast, but I love snow and harsh east coast winters. ;)

I've always been rather biased towards the east coast. I've been out west and I did like it there, but I could not see myself spending the next four years there and I really wanted to be able to go home more than twice a year. I really like going to school in Pittsburgh, mostly because the location is far enough away from home (around 6 hours) but close enough that I could go home for Homecoming and Thanksgiving. I'm sure that schools out on the west coast would offer a great college life too though.

I believe in the Chelsea Clinton theory: if you grow up on one coast, go to school on the other coast. We're SoCal and my D is at college in Massachusetts, so she took the same tack. I think that for "education" in the broadest since, learning something about another part of the country is a good thing. I think it's too bad that so many SoCal kids only consider California schools, as good as they are.

In the west I have lived as far as Texas(Southwest technically) and in the East as far as CT. I can tell you that personally like the west better. The east, mainly the New England area, the schools are great, but there are also many rich snobby people. It is also to cold to anything outside. New England consists of a lot of homebodies, because that is all you can do. In the west, the weather might be way to hot but there is way much more to do. The nightlife is also better in hotter areas. For example there is Austin, Houston, Dallas, L.A., Bay Area, and more. Also places in Arizona which has one of the best party schools. The east has better looking girls though, because they are more diversified especially in cities like New York City and Boston. The quality of education is subjective. Educations is only determined by what you put into it. So overall I would say the west is better.

Think North Coast, Lake Erie, CWRU or CSU, walk to the beach. No normal person does not not live in Cleveland.

i was born in california and lived there for 14 years

then i moved clear across the country 2 years ago and will be here for another 2 years (and then college!)

CA and the west coast does offer a lot of options. but there is a higher concentration of schools out here in the east. there's also a high concentration of people it seems though.

i'd like to think california has a better selection, as seeing half the colleges on my list are there. but then again, that means the other half of my schools are either out east or in the midwest.

i still have to say california and the west is better (or at least in some aspects). even the freezing point is too cold for me out here. albiet, the skiing is MUCH better out there. :)

(i am a little biased...but the east is so different from the west)

im sorry folks, gotta say the east is so much better. now i am biased, and here is why, i was born in NYC, lived my entirely life, but ive spent a combined 17 weeks in LA/SF and ive got to say, i really hate LA, though SF is alright. yes its cold out here, but that doesnt stop people from going out, it just stops people from dressing like sluts, some of them. im not too sure about the education out west, but i know the east has the prime schools.

"Dude, I'm so stoked for surfin' today, those waves are hella good!" The West Coast has a much better climate but I cannot stand the people. Vintage T-shirts, Von Dutch trucker hats, gel in everyones hair....just awful. I'd have to kill myself if I wore any of that trash. The east coast at least has people with class and good taste. And good colleges on the west coast? Hmmmm lets see stanford, berkeley, caltech, and um....thats it. Sure there are plenty of party schools out there but good luck getting a job afterwords. If you want to party but still get a great job at an investment bank or whatnot go to an ivy league or similar school.

Yea, I think East Coast has more better schools hands down, I live in NJ and see no point going far away where there are tons of good schools in PA, NJ, and NY.

"think that for "education" in the broadest since, learning something about another part of the country is a good thing."

But for many, such as myself, going to New England from another part of the east coast is also learning about another part of America, and the furthest I can financially go to do so.

Not that I would go to California for school even if we had the money, because I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like it there. Days like today, when it snowed 5 inches and I went outside and wasted hours doing nothing in it, remind me why I would find it hard to not be here.

Stanford and Caltech are pretty friggin good. California has 2 out of six HYPSMC schools. Only Massachusetts can match that.

California also has the UC system, which is the best public university system in the world. When the UC president threatened to stop using the SATs, the collegeboard peed their pants and completely revised the SAT out of fear of losing their biggest customer.

We also have the Claremont Colleges, which are arguably some of the best LACs.

Which other state has the best private school, the best tech school, the best public universities, and great LACs? Massachusetts comes close, but its public schools suck. Therefore, Calfornia is the best state for colleges, and the West Coast rocks. What other reason is there that our houses are so expensive, the cost of living so high, and so many East Coasters flock here? Cause our place is so nice, and the only reason people live in the East Coast is because they can't afford to live here.

Out of all of my friends from the past 12.5 years of my life, I have met ONE who surfs. What does that tell you about stereotypes? I've never heard of Von Dutch, either. The east coast has a a super elitist attitude... as evidenced by some of the comments on this thread.

I live in Arizona and go to school in Washington DC. I like the west better. I think it's different for every person, though. I hate how many people there are and how completely rushed everyone always is. The west is just more... laid back.

collegeperson makes a very good point. california just has a nice well rounded selection of schools.

and after living in the bay area, i've never touched a surfboard, let alone gone in the ocean all the way. it's so cold!

and i'm assuming the whole Von Dutch thing is a relatively new fad (as in past 2 years)...

and i echo efilsiertaeht's on the "super elitist attitude". i had never been out east before i moved here and i thought it would be a bunch of people in sweater vests and sweaters tied around their neck's in country clubs saying "oh dahhhhling, how simply mahhhhvelous" and the sad thing is...i have encountered these people. not as many as i had originally thought...but they definitly exist. nantucket island gave me a pretty good scare.

*disclaimer: i am not trying to diss the east coast in any whichway shape or form. i'm just saying what i had originally thought and have encountered. the DC area's actually pretty nice. when they get over freaking out about 5 inches of snow...and is EXCELLENT if you're interested in international relations or politics

Both Coasts have their bright spots and their dark spots. But New York City is the greatest city in the United States, maybe the world.

Oh, and techiedork, come to NYC and take a ride on the 7 train (the train I take to school everyday). You will meet the most diverse group of people you've ever seen. And none of them will say "oh dahhhhling, how simply mahhhhvelous"

But both coasts have great beaches (California vs. Myrtle/Daytona Beach and the Gulf Coast), great mountains (although the Rockies beat the Appalachians), great cities (New York beats LA though) and some stretches of absolutely nothing.

i have no idea what von dutch is either. perhaps its because either

A: ive been out of highschool long enough to loose touch with current trends

b: whos vondutch ive never met a dutch person in CA

I've lived on both coasts (moved from Florida -> California -> New Jersey) and I think the East Coast wins in a complete and categorical hands down, no contest, jackpot winner, sorry-you-lost kind of way.

Outside of the super-rich areas or certain touristy-beachy places, I find California to be homogenously UGLY. When you think of CA, forget about Malibu and think about where the average person lives. YUCK. Go to Orange County and look at the kind of dump you can get with your $400,000.

But above all, the first thing that always strikes me like a pile of wooden boards whenever I get out at a CA airport is that weird, hippies-never-died vibe that comes seeping out in every direction. "Laid back".....um, ok. Call it that, I suppose.

Grow up, folks.

I prefer the East Coast because of its gracefully beautiful scenery, elegant homes and lovely neighbourhoods, its worldwise attitude and lifestyle, and its respectable population...

DanielJ

lets clarify here, i agree with kapone, the tri state area up to boston is good, period, throughout the bloody country
