Isn't a Chinese curse" may you live in interesting times" ?

I bumped the Pacific Northwest road trip thread on the off chance that the OP hasn't seen it. There is some great information there.

University of Washington has one of the top ten hospitals in the country right next store. Can we say AWESOME pre-med program?

Is your child going to be needing substantial financial aid? Will you likely qualify for scholarships/grants rather than just the student loans that many f/a packages include?

Do you need to be looking at mostly schools that will give merit scholarships?

Is part of your desire for limiting distance the travel costs that would be incurred if he went to school further away?

Will your son be considered "in-state" in either or both states?

If we take the position and move we will not need financial aid, but have not quite saved enough for an expensive private college ( even if we had it's quickly disappearing) . I would like to think he would get some merit based scholarships, but I don't really know if he will.

It is his desire to live within a few hours drive. I think he would just like to be able to get home without a long interstate drive.

Thanks for the help everyome!!

Your son has good enough stats that some of the LAC's will offer him merit scholarships. Definitely worth looking into.

University of San Francisco is farther than 4 hours, but they have generous merit awards.

Now that we know that merit money is desired, we might be able to come up with closer suggestions.

Will you be "in-state" for Oregon? Or will you not have lived there long enough?

How much research have you done so far? If you are just starting out, are you aware of how much tuition, room, board, books, incidentals are costing these days? If you are mostly considering privates, annual costs can run $40-55k per year (without any scholarships/aid).

He would fit right in a OSU. Two hours from home. Both Corvallis and Portland are about an hour from the beach. Great music scene in Portland for indie rock in Portland.

Thanks again everyone. Still not sure if we will be making the move yet. My son has liked the 3 schools he has visited. ( UNC -Chapel Hill, NC State, Elon) I think he would be happy anywhere, though he wants a school of more than 3000. He doesn't know what he wants. Today engineering, tomorrow poli-sci. It's driving me crazy, but as a person who had 4 majors in 4 yrs, I understand! . I will continue to do the preliminary research as he is finding this all overwhelming together with school, travel hockey , applications. It is all very exhausting.
I continue to welcome any suggestions. Thank you!
