east hall dorms

i've started getting things for my room but i don't know what to expect. i understand that we have a closet but are there drawers in it and stuff? and how high are the beds from the ground? i'm not sure what height of bed raisers i should get. also are there blinds already in the room?

My D is also interested in knowing more about the East rooms. Specifically Packer. (By accident, we’ve found out her building assignment already - not roommate though.)

So anything anyone can add would be very helpful.

I was recently there…
Except for the beds, none of the furniture is moveable. It is all bolted or built into the walls. Each person gets a ‘wardrobe’ closet with a set of drawers built inside. Also, each person gets a desk and bookshelves. The desk has drawers which are useful for clothes.

I can’t remember how high the beds are but they seemed to be low or ‘standard’ height.

There is one big window in the room and I can’t remember if it had shades. Sorry

This isn’t much but here’s a floor plan of pennypacker.

In case you haven’t seen this yet.

East halls advice/comments:

Buy bed risers and a few under bed storage bins from Wal Mart before you come to State College (Wal Mart in State College on move-in weekend is a complete and total zoo) - they’re the best bet for storage and you need the risers as the beds are quite low. Just buy the standard risers from Wal Mart. Alternatively McLanahans downtown (College Ave and Garner St) should probably have these

Don’t bring any lamps/lights/shades/blinds, you’ll get everything you need for these purposes

You have a mirror. Don’t bring another, you don’t need it

Bring some sort of “shower caddy” to haul your stuff from the shower to your room

Bring fan(s). The big cheap box fans work well

There are drawers and stuff in the closet - you might better organize things with some additional bins to place in the closet, but you can’t get a good idea of how this will work for your specific needs without being there and seeing things

My D is moving into a quad at Curtin (EAST) does anyone know the room specs?

I was in Curtin last year and saw a quad. It had 2 sets of bunks beds, 4 desks, 4 dressers, etc. It also didn’t have a window as I recall.

East are actually setup nicely and evenly divided down the middle. definately get the risers for the beds and get 6 of them not 4. A padding for the hard wooden desk chair is smart and of course a 4x6 area rug for center of room and a few mats when you walk in are smart because the floors get kind of gross. Dustbuster a must, shelf lining if you want drawers to look cleaner and a small combo lock. There’s some space between the bed and micro frig for stackable rubbermaid maybe 12-16" in length. Never enough hooks to place on back of the closet doors to hang coats, backpacks, towets etc. Desk lamp is recommended. You will need a 25 ft cable for hardwire connection unless you have a wireless router since dorms aren’t wireless. East are smartly setup with bookshelves, drawers, cabinets, mirror. Don’t fret. whatever you forget there’s a huge Walmart close by and plenty of other stores if you are unfamiliar with state college. Enjoy!!

Mamahills: Why do we need 6 bed rissers instead of 4?

Also, in east, are there laundry rooms on every floor?

they are probably in the basement like all the other halls.

There are a couple of good videos of the rooms on YouTube. You will know it’s East because the desk wraps around to a shelf along the wall. Also, the desk is white. Just search Penn State dorms or East Hall Penn State. One good video is called “my dorm room”. There are also pictures if you search Penn State Dorm on Google and look at images.

I was in Curtin Halls at East during frosh year. The laundry rooms were on every other floor (the girl floors). As far as the doubles goes there is a desk, bed, and closet for each person. There was also a fridge and a microwave. The beds were pretty low from what I remember I think way below my waist and I’m 5’7 so one set of bed raisers did the trick.

Seeing as its less than a month until school starts you should have gotten a walkthrough of the dorms at orientation. I can’t imagine the dorm rooms being any different unless its anything other than the traditional double.

Sorry. The good East Hall room video on YouTube is just called “Dorm”. Search Penn State Dorms.

You should have a 3-4 drawer dresser inside closet. Closet space is pretty good- approx 48 inches wide- has large shelf on top. For bed risers 8 or 10 inch would work well. You can buy stackable drawers at places like Walmart/Target/BedBathBeyond that can go under bed for extra storage.

Not sure why someone recommended 6 bed risers…my daughter use 4 without a problem. Strongly recommend desk lamp as the ones provided tend to be old and not terribly bright. Desk chair on wheels was great purchase - her desk chair was a sad wooden rocking chair. Don’t buy one of those folding/padded chairs- no real room for those at all, we ended up bringing it home during our first visit. Decent closet space, hanging organizer for sweatshirts/sweaters and shoes a plus to bring. Plastic storage drawers from B, B and B are great for under bed storage, and easier to get to rather than pulling out an entire container. Small shelf unit (eg 10-12 inches wide) to put next to micro/fridge combo was handy for snacks, cups/etc. Keurig if they are coffee drinkers. Small Britta water pitcher with filter fits inside fridge without getting in way of roomates’ things, and helps avoid having cases of bottled water. Rug for floor strongly recommended. Lots of 3m type hooks/vecro to put things up on walls.
