I've been looking for information on East Wheelock, but I'm not sure if it would fit me because all that I've seen were sort of broad characterizations, and I wanted to ask for some suggestions on whether it might be right for me. I'm the type of person who really needs a quiet room to study, but I would hate to be antisocial or to live with another person who is antisocial. I'd prefer doubles and triples to singles because I want to interact with people. But on the other hand I want to interact with people who are really academic, because I'm sure I need to work really hard my first year especially because I might be taking the placement exams to place into some harder math classes, and I'm just really not sure how strong I'll be able to resist potential distractions. Plus, I think I will mostly use my room for studying and sleeping and do other things outside or something (but I'm not sure if it'll work out that way, since I've never experienced college life before). Any suggestions on whether EW might be the right place for me?

That’s so close to what I want too! I didnt apply for EW though ><

I was thinking about applying for EW but decided against it. I’d rather get to campus, try to enjoy a “typical” first-year dorm (whatever that ends up being) and then apply for EW for sophomore year. That way I will have sampled the other dorms and will really know what I want.

If we apply for substance-free housing but not EW, does that mean that, say, one wing or one level of a building is sub-free, or does it mean that we could only end up at one of a few buildings?

That’s pretty much what everyone does. There aren’t that many room parties at Dartmouth. I think most people should avoid EW as freshmen unless they are absolutely sure they want an odd, antisocial experience. It’s not that there’s anything particularly wrong with EW – it’s just that it’s in a social bubble all to itself, and that’s sometimes rather weird especially because many EWers are the nerdy and/or antisocial type.

Usually they allot a couple of dorms for sub-free freshmen. In my year sub-free kids wound up either in Judge (the River) or Little (the Choates).
