Eastern Music Festival question

Hi Folks,

My daughter is presently in her freshman year of oboe study at CCM. She is currently attempting to decide on a plan for the summer months. Eastern Music Festival, one of her options, requires a reply in the next few days. My question is whether EMF is primarily intended for those at a high school level of study or whether it is appropriate as well for early conservatory level students.

Thanks in advance for any input you may provide... drd

Yes, it's my understanding that EMF is quite appropriate for your D. My D, a freshman oboe student at NEC, also applied to EMF and was accepted, but will be going somewhere else. She knows many other young conservatory students who also applied to EMF.

I am sorry but I am unfamiliar with the Eastern Music Festival but I was intrigued when I read your daughter was a current freshman at CCM. My daughter is considering attending next year for voice. Anything you would care to share about your daughter's experience so far.

It is for conservatory level high school students too. For example, Itzak(?) Perlman's daughter (a flutist) was there about 6 years ago, and Wynton Marsalis also went there one summer when he was in high school.

My daughter, a viola player, went to EMF the summer before last. It was a great experience. The string players seemed to be a mix of high school and college students. The winds were mostly college players and played at a very high level. Feel free to PM me and I'll have my daughter reply.

My son went last summer, between his junior and senior years of high school. He's a pianist and had a great time. Very nice mix of older high school and college students. More college students, though.

I was a pianist and went last year also... I'm returning this year as well. It was tons of fun, I learned a lot, and was overall a really positive experience. I agree with the person above me... I would say that for piano, roughly 13/19 were college aged or going into college, while 6/19 were not. Those stats are similar for other instruments... All woodwinds players are very advanced, and almost exclusively college aged students.

A friend of mine who went to EMF for 5 years was accepted to juilliard las year on a full scholarship, and might return to EMF for his 6th year, between his fresh and soph year @ juilliard.

Our son attended EMF last summer, between sophomore and junior year college. Plays tuba. I'm sure he said the brass players were mostly college age.
They housed the high school students in one building, I believe, and the college kids in another.
Son drove himself to EMF with tuba(s) in the station wagon. It was a 'road trip' from NJ and he enjoyed himself tremendously.
