Hi everyone,
I have to choose a scholarship to one of these camps by tomorrow because of a competition I placed in (cello), so could you guys please give me your opinions of both summer camps? What is the relative playing level of the people at both camps? What are the pros and cons of each? Is one harder to get into (I still need to audition to them in a month, the scholarship is only awarded to me if I get in). Thanks so much!
Hi,
Congratulations on your scholarship.
My daughter was accepted to Brevard last year, but opted to go elsewhere. Her former private teacher – a highly respected professional musician and conservatory teacher – attended Brevard and considered it a valuable experience. My daughter has played for one of the conductors there and he’s quite good. She’s a wind player, which is a slightly different world from strings, so the pecking order among summer programs I hear from her may not apply.
Brevard is all high school, EMF is a mixture of high school and college. On the basis of that, I would presume EMF would be a tougher admit, though that could vary from year to year and instrument to instrument. If I’m remembering correctly, EMF’s website has some performance videos and they sound quite good. Brevard may be a more structured environment than EMF. I don’t know you to know which you’d prefer.
noviceatoller, Brevard has separate programs for high school and college/pre-prfessional levels (which take place at the same time). My daughter did the college level and it was absolutely fantastic. We attended a few of the concerts and I was floored by the level of playing.
I did know that, I assumed from the use of the word “camp” in the original post that he/she is not in college yet.
